Something weird happened.

So I recently decided to reinstall and play The Technomancer after a while.

Played normally for a couple of days, all the way until I reached Noctis. No problems, smooth play.

Played again today before taking a break for some food. Saved the game, and closed it as normal.

A few hours later, I started the game again, and when loading my safe, the game crashed with an out-of-memory error. I never had this error before. This happened over and over. Now I can't play it at all.

I tried restarting my laptop, starting a new game, deleting the game, and re-installing it, but nothing works. I even reduced the game's affinity to 4 cores (never was a problem before).

Other games worked fine. Just this particular one is weird.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I like it a lot. Kinda want to finish it again.

EDIT:

I figured it out: I think there was something wrong with the savegame file. I moved everything in the 'The Technomancer' folder in my documents to a backup folder, including the default profile file.

Then I started a new game with the same video settings. Ran well again.

Then as a test, I moved just the latest savegame from the backup folder to the main folder and tried to load it, and it crashed.

So now, I'm gonna have to start again. My question is, is there anything I can do to prevent the same thing from happening again? I don't mind starting over; I just don't want to have to do this again.

EDIT 2:

Problem persists. Seemed to be smooth through the tutorial and the first mission with Sean. Crashes right after the Great Mantis fight and transitions back to Ophir for the ceremony. I don't even know anymore.

EDIT 3:

Managed to get through the ceremony. Problem occurs when loading a new area. I've been googling like a mad man with no answers.

Have you checked that the game is not installed in either C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86)? This has been known to cause more than a few problems with saving/reloading, etc. It's best to install in (for example) C:\GOG Games.

Secondly, have you checked it's not your anti-virus interfering with the files. This too has been known to cause issues often too. You just need to set your anti-virus to ignore the game folder.

Finally, not sure if you use Galaxy but if you do try running the game via it's .exe without Galaxy running to see if that makes a difference. Hope this helps.

Oh I haven't tried the antivirus thing. I'll set an exception on the folder.

I tried running it on Galaxy, and the game's exe. Same problem.

The game is installed on its own folder in C:. It's not in Program Files, so I don't think that's the issue. I've also tried increasing my virtual memory. All to no avail.

I'll try the AV thing and see if it works.

UPDATE:

It seems to work. Tried it a couple of hours earlier with no more crashes. Thank you for your help! Still don't understand how AV can mess with a game like that. From a legit source too.

Great news - glad you've got it sorted :)
Adding some notes in case other folks have the same problem and search for this very topic:

The problem doesn't fully go away. Every once in a while, you'll have a CTD with an out-of-memory error.

I don't know why this happens, but at least it happens very rarely.

Something I did to make it even rarer is adding an AV exception to the savegame folder as well (Documents/The Technomancer). This seemed to help.

You can also ensure that you update your drivers and have older DirectX stuff. You can find that online. I did both as one of my initial troubleshooting steps. It helped a little, but the game still crashed frequently; the AV exception is still necessary - at least in my system.

So that's that. One can still play the game smoothly, just have to accept that it's gonna crash some time. Just restart the game and it should run fine.
