I managed to figure it out for myself without having to buy an external numpad. As a side note, I'm on Windows 11.
For anyone else on Windows who is looking for a way to get around this, this is what worked for me:
1) Access the On-screen keyboard:
cntrl + windows button + O
*Note: This is the keyboard bind to turn the on-screen keyboard on and off
Or
Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard
2) Turn on the numeric pad option
On the right hand side of the on-screen keyboard, click on the "options" button
Click the 3rd option down labeled "Turn on numeric keypad"
Click "Ok" at the bottom
Now you should see the num pad on the right hand side of the on-screen keyboard
3) Click on "NumlLock." Now you should see that elusive numpad 4 on the right hand side.
4) Run the game on windowed mode
5) Progress until you are prompted to use numpad 4 to access your notes. When prompted, access your maps.
6) Resize and place the On-screen keyboard so that the mouse cursor is automatically hovering above the numpad 4 button when playing the game. This will likely be a trial and error process, use alt+tab to make it easier.
7) With the on-screen keyboard turned on and your cursor "stuck" in the game, simply click on the on-screen 4 to access your notes
Ta-da! Now you can progress freely. I tried being as explicit as possible, but if this doesn't work for you, then enjoy the unintended out-of-game horror experience.
