Hello everyone. I recently installed the Settlers III off GOG on my widows 8 laptop. I would also like to purchase the Settlers IV off of GOG but i want to make sure it works. On the site it is listed compatible for windows 7 and windows vista. Can anyone let me know if this has worked for them or not? Or does anyone think that this game will run on windows 8? Please and thanks.

I'm not really concerned with the financial risk of buying the game but i don't want any computer complications.

i just tested it on win8.1 and it has weird slow downs with high graphic options (never had that on win7) no problems with software rendering though. cant say if the problem is limited to 8.1 or if it occurs in vanilla win8 too. other than that, it works well.

How did you manage to start the game? I have tried the compability options, but I allways get a error message. I did play it on win7, but not on win8 (i do not have 8.1 yet)

the gog version installed and started without any problems on my pc, no additional work needed. whats your error message?

I am downloading the game again now jst to check if not the download messed it up, has happened before with other games.

i guess you have an intel onbard graphics chip and an AMD/Nvidia gpu?
might be the cause

I was able to get Settlers 4 working on Windows 8.1 64bit by using a tool called DXGL. DXGL will drop a file called ddraw.dll into the Settlers 4 folder which replaces the Windows 8 ddraw.dll file.

Step 1: Install DXGL
Download and install DXGL from here: https://www.williamfeely.info/wiki/DXGL/

Step 2: Configure DXGL
1. Run Configure DXGL
2. Click the "Add" button
3. Browse to the Settlers 4 folder
4. Open the "Exe" folder under Settlers 4
5. Select the "S4_Main.exe" file
6. Click "Open" to close the browse window
7. Click "OK" to close the DXGL Config window

Step 3: Enjoy
Now you can play Settlers 4. Enjoy!
