So I was trying to find some good sites on Settlers II with info on stuff like building ratios and general strategies, but I couldn't find any. Even Gamefaqs only had two poor FAQs on this classic game, much to my surprise. Does anyone here know of any good sites where one can read up on tactics and such?
5 Woodcutters for 2 Foresters, 3 or 4 Sawmills total as soon as resources allow for it, one Iron Smelter for each one Armory or Metalworks, build one or two central processing areas and keep the rest open for Farms. For optimal delivery speed of goods keep the roads as short as possible (ie. have a lot of those flagpoles). Avoiding traffic jams is important. But well, this is just how I play. Resources won't often be a problem unless you contruct way too much or if the map is very limited on the most crucial ones.

I have http://settlers2.net/ but I don't have any general strategies there, partly because I haven't spent the time to maintain the site. I got a Settlers II season when the GoG.com version was released, but as the interest has been on the low side I haven't kept going on with the site.

If it gains any interest from you folks here, I could consider changing the site into a MediaWiki so providing the site with content & fixing information would be easy. I'm not planning on dropping the domain; keeping the site doesn't cost me a lot.

Thanks for the tips and link. I was surprised there wasn't a huge amount of active websites for this game as with many others. It was such an appealing game back in the day. :S
Yup, it is a great game, I was surprised on how low the interest has been. I guess most people just have forgotten about it. It has a huge following in Germany though, there is a newly recoded game with multiplayer capabilities (The Settlers II - Return to the Roots). But it still didn't have any AI the last time I checked, so it gets quite boring for one player games.
Merri, me and you have a common interest here.. Settlers. For me Settlers started with 1 and ended with 2 ...the media wiki project is very interesting!! thats the way.. if you need some help
Instead of a MediaWiki I simply installed a WordPress. I ported the old pages to the new installation. This change should make it easier to share information around, like if somebody knows how to play multiplayer, or has information/ideas to post or questions to ask.

Anyone is welcome to register (you can login with Facebook, very easy that way), let me know here or post a comment on the site and I'll give permission to write pages and/or posts.

I've been updating the site now quite a bit, not that much new content really (yet), but instead have organized the information in a more user friendly way. I'm still in the process and there is a lot of content that still needs to be added once things are re-organized.

All pages on the site can be commented, so if you have anything to add or ask then please do so!

First, 3 Woodcutters, 1 Forester and 2 Sawmills are a good start, add 2 Wodcutters, 1 Forester and 1-2 Sawmills later. The second additional if you have woodcutters somewhere just to free some space for e.g. farms. One Iron smelter per Armory or Metalworks.
2 Farms per Mill, 1-2 Bakeries, if you have multiple farm-complexes. Don't build Pig farms, the use more space than windmills (2 big, 1 + 1 middle compared to 2 big + 1 big + 1 middle) and you don't get any advantage from it - the guys in the mines eat everything, not like in Settlers 3 where they prefer foods. One Farm for a Donkey breed or Brewery is enough.
Build a lot of Storehouses, you should have at least one anytime on your screen. Keep roads short, putting everything that belongs together (like mines, Iron smelter, armory and metalworks) close togehter, connect those complexes with storehouses.
That should sum up the most important things, there are a lot of german fan sites with more and detailed information, google and it's translator should help to get an idea.
