I am on windows 10. The game closes after 1-2 minutes without any evident error message.

Any ideas ?

When you're using GOG Galaxy then in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\The Settlers II - 10th Anniversary\data\settings\engine.ini

or without GOG Galaxy then in:
C:\GOG Games\The Settlers II - 10th Anniversary\data\settings\engine.ini

In this file there's this value:
hardwareCursor = 1

Change it to 0,
maybe this will help with the crashes.

Alternatively use the latest Widescreen Fix. But it won't work with some older computers.
