I was pretty excited to see The Settlers II 10th Anniversary show up when I went on to GOG this morning. It was an instant buy. I had previously owned it on CD, but had lost it.

I haven't played it too much today yet, since I've been into other games, but when trying out the first mission I was having some fairly annoying issues with the camera.

In the game you use the mouse wheel to zoom and hold right-click to pitch your view.
But the camera was sometimes getting stuck/locked, and making the mouse behave strangely.
When holding the right mouse button to look around, sometimes the game randomly locks the camera view, when this happens the game also pauses.
I have to left click to fix this, but that doesn't always work.

When/if I get it working again, sometimes the mouse won't work properly; the last time it only let me move the mouse to the bottom 60% of the screen. So I was unable to click any UI buttons at the top. Like there was an invisible wall covering the top of the screen.

In the very short time I've played this has happened a lot. Most of the times I've used right click to look around this will happen.

My best guess was it was a full screen or window problem. Since the mouse being blocked seemed kind of like it was reaching the top of the game window and couldn't leave it, even though it wasn't at the top.
Currently I'm playing in full screen.
Windowed skews the aspect ratio which bothers me, so I haven't tried that.
Maybe if there was a maximized window option or something it would fix it.

Anyways has anyone else noticed this problem? I don't remember it when I used to own the game.
Maybe it's a temporary but that will disappear after restarting my pc or something.

edit:
Sorry about this post now being marked as needing a solution, since I seemed to have figured it out, if anyone knows how to fix this it would be nice.

Ok I think I found a solution; maybe it will help anyone else with this issue.

In the games Settings menu there's the tab Input Settings.
Set Smart Cursor to Disabled.

With this setting disabled, every time I hold right-click to look around the cursor automatically centers on the screen.
When it was enabled it was causing the cursor to end up in all sort of weird locations around the screen, causes many issues.
(I was unable to click the 'close' button on menu's, my cursor couldn't reach the top or left sides of the screen, etc.)

So far it seems disabling the smart cursor setting has fixed it for me.

edit:
Oh, geez...
After starting the game up again the issue was back, even with smart cursor disabled.
Alt-tabbing a couple times fixed it, so I'm not sure what's causing the mouse to not lock onto the screen when the game starts up. Before I must have alt-tabbed before turning smart cursor on and thought it was that that fixed it.

I also have been having mouse problems. Sometimes I am unable to close a popup by clicking on the X, at other times the screen seems to freeze in a particular direction, so that I can scroll left with the mouse but not right. I have no solutions, unfortunately, just wanted to add myself as a person experiencing problems.

EDIT: Just a note that I appear to have solved my issues by playing at 1280x1024 (my desktop resolution) instead of the default 1024x780.

I've already been playing at my desktop resolution.
But all I've been doing now to work around this issue is after starting up the game, when it shows the 'Start' button before the main menu I Alt-Tab to desktop, then Alt-Tab again back into the game.

An easy way, I've found, to tell if you have this issue is when you start up the game and see that 'Start' button, hold your mouse to the edges of the screen. If you have the issue your mouse will change into horizontal or vertical 'stretch' arrows, which are usually used to re-size windows.
After Alt-Tabbing these arrows go away, and I don't have the problem within the game anymore.
You have to edit the shortcut you use (on vista, w7, w8) to play the game to avoid the "can't click ingame popup"

Right click the shortcut, select properties, go to the compatibility tab and select 'disable visual themes' and press ok.

that fixes it

Another solution: Start settlers, start mission, open your headquarter info screen, double click on it. Everything works.

That fixed the problem for me too! :)
Disabling the windows theme worked for me, and it seems to be the easiest non-hassle way of doing it;
so I've marked this as solved.

Thanks to DarkjeThe2nd in particular, but also everyone else for helping and giving feedback.

Thank you so much for this! This made the game playable for me as well :-)
