First of all thank you for making this available...I've been waiting for this for a while and my old, old, old CDs no longer work.

I think I'm not the first to ask this: but is there any possible way to get this to play in window mode? I've tried the old -w -window. Even this 'hook' program. no dice. Any experts out there able to lend me a lend? Playing this fullscreen on dual monitors throws me way off (it squishes the two 'screens' into one on the 'free' monitor.
I want to second that. I love being able to play that old game again. But I am in dire need of a support for windowed mode.
What I'm doing with all these old games is running a Virtual Machine via VirtualBox using XP.

This eliminates the "Alt-Tab" problem even though the Wiki shows how to fix this, and solves issues with games not REALLLLLLLlllyyyyy wanting to run under Win7.

I'll be downloading this game momentarily. :]
Yeah, having window mode added would be awesome.
I just bought this game for the first time too. :)
It defenitly would be nice. There is a way for it in original Settlers 3, but I can't find config.ini file with gog.com game:/ Desperately needed option.
Also it would be nice to increase max resolution options.

Enjoy,

Yeah, what's up with that, no config, nothing ... and I would also like a windowed mode.

Nope, even in the original S3 there is no windowed mode option. It is also not possible to change the max resolution: there is a way to do that by modifying the s3.exe file, but the effect is not at all what you would expect - and it is not playable then.

If you want windowed mode: play Settlers 3 on Linux with Wine in Wine's "windowed mode" - that works for me :)

This is how you run Settlers 3 in a window:

Download DxWnd from here.
Extract it to some place. Consider a permanent place because you will be using it for multiple games.
Run dxwnd.exe as admin.

On the first time, you do this:
Click Edit->Global settings...
Under 'Flags', tick 'Check for Admin rights'; this will ensure you won't forget to run it as admin in the future.
Under 'Defaults', select 'X,Y coordinates' and enter: X: 100, Y: 0, W: 1600, H: 1200 (X/Y are the top left corner, W/H is your preferred resolution). These settings will be copied to new game profiles.

Now, we add our Settlers 3 profile.
Click Edit->Add...

1. On the 'Main' tab:
Name: Settlers 3 (or whatever else you prefer).
Path: select the location of S3.EXE; e.g. D:\GAMES\S3ULT\S3.EXE
Launch: select the location of S3.EXE; e.g. D:\GAMES\S3ULT\S3.EXE

Under 'Generic'
Tick these:
- 'No banner'.
- 'Run in Window'
- 'Aquire admin caps'

Under 'Position'
Note that the defaults you set earlier were copied here. You can tweak them here further.
Tick:
- 'Keep aspect ratio'.

2. On the 'Input' tab:
Under 'Cursor handling', tick:
- 'Correct mouse position'.
Under 'DirectInput', tick:
- 'Hook dinput'.
- 'Hook dinput8'.
- 'Unacquire input devices on focus lost'.

3. On the 'Video' tab:
Under 'Windows handling', tick:
- 'Modal Style'.
Under 'Window size & position', select:
- 'Floating'.

4. On the 'DirectX' tab:
Under 'Emulation', tick:
- 'GDI mode'.

All other settings should be good at their defaults, so click ok.
You will see the new profile in the list.
Double-click the profile to run it and enjoy windowed Settlers 3.

When you exit DxWnd and it asks you whether you want to save the task list, say yes, otherwise you will lose your new S3 profile.

From here on, all you need to do is double-click the S3 entry to play.

One more thing:
you might want to enable "auto-hide" for the Windows task-bar so you get more real estate.

Game crashes everytime i leave the window in this mode.
Good shit. It is working. Thanks mate.

If you dont want to crash it anymore please uncheck "Unacquire input devices on focus lost" in Input tab.

Then everything works just fine.

Hey there,
Doesn't seem to work. Followed all the steps, no dice. I tried to path it to S3.EXE and all I get is a black borderless window. If I path it to single.exe the game boots up normally with no window mode.

Any Ideas?

*** I figured it was either Video or DirectX that was causing the issue. Was able to get the game to run by changing DirectX>Emulation>Renderer to "Primary Buffer".

I think GoG should add the option to the game. I stand by this opinion and hope they'll get the chance to look into it at some point.
