Basically a tutorial for exploring and taking over other islands, but I must be doing something wrong here. :P I can usually get a mine or two done, one or two towers/lookouts but then everything comes to dead standstill. I've tried tweeking everything I can think of and no luck. For a while I thought maybe I was doing too much too quickly so I settled one island at a time, no go. So I upped the delivery priority to wood and stone...nothing. My main island does fine if I try to build but everyone on my outpost just stands there reading the paper or jumping rope.

EDIT
I'm doing much better but I still feel like I might be missing something obvious. One thing I love about this series is the old adage 'Easy to learn hard to master'. It's a lot less complicated and less intricate than a lot of civ/RTS games which I like but there are always little things you can learn to streamline it. It never gets old albeit always remains a little nerve racking. :P

Well, the boat system in Settlers 2 was always bad. I still can't figure out how to keep resources delivered by boat to actually stay in that place. Another boat would always come along and remove it before any of it could be used, only for it to be brought back again two minutes later by a different boat. An endless cycle pick-ups/deliveries by boats! With the construction, make sure you actually have materials in-stock and they are staying there. The boat missions are the worst part of Settlers 2.
The ai considering the ships is bad, but it should work most of the time. Usually the ai should be smart enough to transport the needed goods to and from islands. I remember some "rules" to not trigger to much problems, unfortunatly the website I got them from is not available any more and only remember one:

First of all, don't build more than one harbour on any island, it will screw everything up. Also, don't build to many ships, 3-4 should be enough.
