Elondrius: Disclaimer: I've only played Settlers III.
Archers can't take over a tower by themselves, I think this is common knowledge, but sometimes I've faced with the issue that spearmen can't take it either. They can hold it themselves, but taking over without issues usually requires a swordsman.
In Settlers III the AI didn't destroy towers, but as a player its a good choice if all seems lost (and its still a possibility). Maybe it got smarter in IV. Destroying towers don't make them lose territory by itself, but its not watched over anymore, so a tower of your own or some pioneers can take over that piece of land from then on.
Thank your for your response. Maybe sometimes in IV AI works much better but problem is so bigger. For instance:
- the opponent loses all his towers, but his territory does not decrease and the remaining buildings do not disappear.
or
- The enemy's towers do not explode, but they cannot be taken over. Even though I have soldiers all over his territory (also with swords), the tower cannot be taken over
