Continuing with the inspiration I'm currently having I've started working on a new site dedicated for the game. My target is to have about anything relating to the game covered, starting from the basics (getting the game to work, using cheats, introductions) to more advanced topics (making maps, using map generator) and even to expert level stuff (how to modify/create campaigns, changing game strings, file format specs, advanced tools). I first try to cover the basics, and once I've got those done I start covering the advanced & expert topics as I continue with the programming project I currently have.
There isn't yet as much as I'd like there to be, but I hope you like the design and stuff that is there already :) Some links may be temporarily broken as things change, occasionally on a rapid speed.

Had a little break yesterday, but now I've been working on the guide. I started out on the construction and buildings and I also wrote the cheat parts. Right now I'm starting off writing all the details on each building which will probably take quite a while to complete. Luckily the German sites have some existing information that I can easily add in.

No, the GOG.com version is 1.51 already. The update is only useful for those playing with original CD.

I bought this game when it was released and it was very entertaining.
I tried to get it to work with dosbox etc but it was too much hazzle so i decided to download it from gog.com instead, very fast and easy, I'm installing it atm.

I just got the GoG version for a friend and she'd really like to play the game in German again (nostalgia and all..).

I tried the language patch but it doesn't work, after the intro movie, the game crashes to the desktop. I tried installing the unofficial German 1.52 patch but that doesn't fix anything (tried installing it right after installing the game, then 1.52, then the language patch and also lang patch first, then 1.52). I also tried copying the German files from the old original game into the DATA folder but nothing.

Is there any way to make this work?

I have the german version, but i I played a bit with the english version.
When I use the german translation patch, the game crashes on startup. Looking at the log files (stdout.txt and stderr.txt), I noticed that the error was that the map-files a write-protected. Settlers 2 tries to open /Settlers 2 Gold/Data/maps4Map01.swd at startup and any other map when I try to load it, it write-mode (for whatever reason).
So unpack the lang patch somewhere else and copy the folders "ONLINE", "TXT", "TXT2" and "TXT3" to your Settlers 2 folder. The most of the game is in german, only the messages at the start and during a mission are english. It's better than nothing. I havn't tried every map, but the first four of the campaign are starting properly, not sure how they behave in longer games.

€dit: 21:53: more checks and I noticed that there are files missing in the german langpack, the message box for the campaign! I created a fixed version with the files from my boxed german version.

Just a little comment on the site.

I found it very straining on the eyes to visit the place. Light grey text on grey background does not make for comfortable reading.

Was also very puzzled why you don't use fishing huts. They are an excellent way to get free food. I'd mostly agree with hunters though as the resources tend to die out almost before the hut is up. Unless the forest is big and you don't expand into it at all.

It got incredibly hard to find a decent filehoster for small files without registration or other crap, share-online is slow (capped at 33kb/s for free users), but the file has only 1,5mb, should be tolerable. Everything else I found wants me to register and buy premium and so on, but not for one file...

I added the German V1.51 language files to the download page and added notice to the V1.52 download that it first requires V1.51

I've released a new map upload, download and editor service:

It is still in a very early phase of development, but it works for personal map storage. Later on it is possible to add maps to Map Database to be shared with everyone and more map editing features are on the way.

Uploading and editing a map requires an account (it's the same as on the main site). You can see screenshots on About page if you don't feel a need to register yet. The biggest feature atm is that it allows one to easily change world type between Greenland, Wasteland and Winter World.
