So I didnt get into this series until S3 with the Amazons and such. I really enjoyed it and purchased the expansions and such but never got around to back tracking to I and II. Since S2 is the only one available on GOG and I would like to get back to this game my question is... Whats the difference?

Should I dig up my old S3 disks and get them running or should I go back to S2? I have heard many people say II was the pinnacle of the series but never really why. So i put the question to you!

I liked S2 better (played it first, then S3)
The economy system is similar, the main difference is that there are roads on which units must travel, and you lack direct control to any units.

It's more strategic than S3, while S3 is more tactical than S2.

My advice: get S2. It's really cheap here. Worst case is that you'll like it less than S3, but I'm sure that you'll still find it a great game to play.

Also if you go as far as rttr.info you'll find Return to the Roots that provides internet multiplayer and the ability to get rid of some possible annoyances with the greater selection of options. RttR is fanmade and open source, but requires the original game to play.

I think the re-make of Settlers 2 is EXCELLENT. Love playing that game.

... I am kinda of interested in Settlers III and IV. Now, by some posts, i'll assume they are diferent in gameplay to Settlers II (wich i have, gog version - and was at a time interested in getting the 10th anniversary edition aswell, but i'm not sure about that one either..).

I sorta of can get (or try) Settler IV at amazon.co.uk, but Settlers III seems to be reaaaally dificult to get (and the third is the main one i wanted to get).

Is there any chance - slim even - of ever seeing Settler III gold and Settlers IV gold on gog?

Settlers 2 was always my favourite settlers game, I always loved it- and knights and merchants but that isnt a settler game.


I have played most of the settlers games, and 3 and 4 do not come close to compairing to how good 2 was. 2 just worked, it was fun, easy to play but still great fun. The remake was very well done, I hope it gets put on GOG one day, because they would include the vikings expansion which was german only.

It can be translated to English though. The voice-over is still German but the text is English so that works well enough for me. More diverse missions too, and some good changes with auto-coin and a few other things.
