I guess a lot of us here find Settlers 2 (the original of course) challenging, yet sometimes too challenging. I really could get some good advices, for example about how to do the difficult maps. I am on The Snake now and it gets harder and harder. I don't think I want (or I can) catapult myself again through the enemy like in the Chinese map (In the wasteland, or something like that), and probably no ships are involved either (like in On The High Seas or Divided Country). So, what to do in the Seventh map of the Roman Campaign?
I've found an old gaming magazine with walkthrough for Settlers 2.
Basically all they say is that the gate is to the west, in red player's territory and that you should ASAP expand to western mountains, in northern part (of those mountains) you will find some gold, iron and coal are in southern part. Later you should capture southwestern mountains, again containing gold. The last advice is, that southeastern mountains contain some gold and coal too.
Not much, but hope it will help.
Thanks for the answer, I managed to do it.
In the end, anyone can feel free to use this thread to ask about maps. I'm doing the next one now, Sea Routes.
Sincerely

I always seem to run out of soldiers on "On The High Seas". I find that I can't progress further because I don't have any soldiers left for expansion! How can I finish off the map?
Edit: Never mind I figured it out. :P

Hey King, did you forgot too that new soldiers need beer? :) I did as a kid...

Okay I'm on Sea Routes now, map VIII, and don't really know how to do it. The 2 african kingdoms are a massive force together and they're coming from the west. I'm also there for the mining. On the other hand, I should have a sea port and (I guess) I should get to the arch with a ship and make a colony there, since I cannot fight my way through 2 kingdoms.
Question is... how? Should I just rush to the east as the map starts to the seaport and not care about mining, so I avoid the africans completely?

So, you should attack the yellow enemy from the beginning and continue W until next mountains. The earlier you beat him, the merrier resources you can mine for yourself. The gate is on the SW end, continue to W to the shore and then just go S through red's territory.

Ah right. So I should just do it the old way. Somehow I thought ships are involved. I think there was a landing site close to the gate, but the red player killed the ship's colony. I thought, maybe if I get there earlier, I can just sail to the gate? But seems like no. Okay, thanks alot! I also found a walkthrough on the net, it tells the same. Defend your position, get to the 2 islands for gold, then kill yellow and go to gate.
What about the last map? Just until you have the magazine in the reach of your hands :)

Loverman: What about the last map?
So:
Basically you should hold off red enemy N from your headquarters and capture/mine mountains on NW (the volcano) and W. Then train larger amount of better soldiers and attack yellow enemy, to the NW where is the gate.
