Hello there fellow GOGers.

I recently bought the Settlers II game. Great joy and nostalgia followed as I played this game when I was a kid, and enjoyed the management of the game. BUT (And there is always a but :().
I ran into to trouble. When I install the game it runs fine, but as soon as I try to launch it a second time it simply crashes to desktop. I cannot figure out what the issue is. I have tried to edit the graphics from the GoG.com folder, but I cant seem to chance any settings =/

I hope someone out there can help me here, since I really want to play this timeless classic!!!

Thanks in advance!

This question / problem has been solved by Oediimage
it would be easier to find a solution if you would post details about the system you are playing on

What strikes me is that it worked the first time, and now it doesnt work at all. So I fear it might be something with the actual games setup. Rather than doxbox >.<
And I cant seem to edit the config file for dosbox, since I am denied access. Sadly =/

But at the moment, any help is welcome!

There is a bit of info on the system spec below.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130318-1533)

System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: Z68AP-D3

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16302MB RAM
------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 560
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1201&SUBSYS_091A10DE&REV_A1

Shared Memory: 3071 MB
Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Philips 273ELH (27inch Wide LCD MONITOR 273E3LH)
And just as I wrote this post earlier I figured it out. Success!

I took some advice from this post here: gog.com/forum/the_settlers_series/settlers_2_gold_windows_xp_crash_to_desktop

Which described a simillar problem, but that user could actually launch the game.

So I tried to edit the config file, as described in the link above, and it wouldnt let me as I needed Administrator rights, but I am the admin :P
Real problem editing the config file was actually because of the entire Settlers II folder was read-only.
So I got that changed to read and write. Afterwards I changed the graphic setting from "Overlay" to "Opengl".
Saved the config file, and the game launched straight away after that, in fullscreen, and everything.

So sorry for the bother guys, and gals. Sorry for the trouble Oedi, but thanks for being there anyway :D

Hope people that are in future need of assistance can use the above for some rough guideline as to how fixing crashing on start up!

Now playing Settlers II \o/
if you installed the game in the standard path C:\program files its totally normal not to have administrator rights there even if you are admin. you have to actively allow programs to to change files in that path, so its recommended almost everywhere not to install software like games in there, because (older games) write their config and save games files in the gamefolder, which it cannot do because of lacking admin priveleges. therefore most games will crash or wont save at all.

That is exactly what happened, I think, because my save games was gone aswell.
So I had to start over, but now that everything works, I am just happy =)

So now to make Settlers 3 work, as it got a black screen when started, and only option is to turn off the PC. xD
