I just downloaded S2 from GOG.com - it installed fine and when I run it, the intro movie comes up (the sound is a little jerky) and then the splash screen and menu, complete with music. All fine!
But if I try to actually start a game - if I go into either campaign and click the "start game" button, or if I choose a free game, go through the setup options, and try to start it - the program quits out to a black dosbox screen which sits there for a few seconds and then disappears.
I've checked my drivers (all current) and I've tried out all the graphics modes and gone into the config to try lowering the screen resolution. I'm trying to run this on a new Acer Aspire 1 netbook running XP - it's possible it simply can't run the game but the processor and graphics seem like they should be good enough for something that I used to run on our rickety PC in 96!
It does seem as though it's some problem with the game files themselves since it only happens when I try to actually start a game, but I'm not sure what that could be. Any thoughts?

... so of course two seconds after I posted this, I discovered one more thing I hadn't tried, and guess what? Solution!

So since I can't delete the original post, here is said solution for future reference: I was trying to change the game resolution in the S2config program rather than within Settlers 2 itself. In fact, you can also get at the in-game resolution settings from the main game menu, and in my case setting the resolution to 800x600 instead of 1024x768 resulted in smooth running. Although now I have to deal with the squashed graphics problem since my screen is 1024x600...

If your talking about settlers 2 it should be running through dosbox, if you hit alt-enter it will put the game into windowed mode which should solve your squashed graphics problem.
