The current behavior hurts the eye with its implausibility. I propose to add the ability to equip all types of modules with anti-meteorite protection, create horizontal shields to protect everything below them from meteorites, and at the latest levels of development, allow the creation of force fields of various radius of the sphere. This will also create a cool, old-school sci-fi cosmetic visual effect.
Maybe everything already has build in anti-meteorite protection and repair capabilities. We don't know how advanced the technology is.
I'm with Skardavelnate on this, the material ('super alloy' -- certainly sounds super) could very well be designed to withstand meteor impacts.

Besides, with the present behaviour of comets dropping around your current location this is a bad idea, even if I understand your concern about the suspension of disbelief. It's a can of worms (how do you track down damaged machinery? how would the repair process work? could it lead to irrecoverable losses/roadblocks if limited resources are wasted?). No thanks.
