I bought Strife just the other day, and the one obstacle I'm having the most issue with is Radiation/Toxic damage. I understand that if I wear the radiation suit I'll be temporary immune to the toxic/rad damage. But when I leave a certain room (the place where the crystal is in the power plant). I'm STILL taking damage, and I watch as my medkits get eaten up and eventually die. Does damage last for a specific time frame?

Also, I'm underneath the sewers at the moment and I notice a similar problem there. Is there any way to tell if an area has radiation? (the manual says that I can't see it)

The screen should flash green when you are in a radioactive/poison area then turn solid when you are poisoned.

Once the screen starts flashing you start accumulating radiation damage. You have about 20 seconds to put on an environmental suit when this happens. Otherwise, once the screen turns solid green, you will begin to lose health from the accumulated damage.

Once you are outside a radioactive area, the accumulated damage counter will begin to decrease, but you will still take damage until it drops below the threshold it reached where the damage started. Depending on how long you took to put on an environment suit, this could even kill you. I've seen a guy on YouTube dead-end his game by going through the entire power station without one and then dying in the town because he couldn't stop the damage. He thought it was a bug, but no. It's actually kind of realistic if you compare it to real radiation - exposure past a certain amount will always kill you.
There's an explanation of the game mechanics (with numbers and technical details) here; it's for the ZDoom port so it also talks about other stuff that is less relevant here, but the whole paragraph beginning with "certain sector types originating from Strife" should be accurate.

Yeah, the 1.3 update was primarily to add Galaxy support. We pushed through other minor fixes along with it.
