I've been wanting this game for awhile now, but if I'm not mistaken, the dev's are under-handing the GOG.com version by giving it old updates and basically treating the people on GOG.com like trash.

is this still true? what version is the gog.com right now?

I don't think i'll support such a developer.

Although they make gogers to wait between 1.21 and the last version, it seems they updated the game to 1.30 at the same time they did it with Steam version so yes, it is updated also on GOG. I don't know if they will do the same with next patches, let's see.

I was wondering the same as you, i am also considering buying the game here (even if i already have it on Steam, but it's so good that i want it on GOG)

I think it's personal.

They indeed don't release all main releases and in between hotfixes. They've done a few updates on GOG at the same time as Steam. But most of them had a delay of 2 - 6 weeks (mostly 2).

There's a positive side about it though: most of the versions that don't arrive on GOG contain (game breaking) bugs. Eventually when all bugs have been patched with several hotfixes, GOG players get the update which is 99% completely stable.

Personally at first I didn't really liked this, but after hearing people on Steam and other platforms losing their save files of many hours due to game breaking bugs... I actually like it that the releases we get are certainly stable.
So it kinda depends on how you look at it. After most hotfixes have been released the last one is most times released on GOG 1-2 days after the release on Steam (on average 2 weeks pass for all hotfixes).

As an backer of the crowdfunding campaign I can assure you one thing: The Long Dark has become way better and in high quality then I ever imagined. And it's still growing, many updates to go. It's worth it, trust me. :D

Edit: a small note I like to add. A lot of annoyance in the GOG community was due to the ignorance of the dev's. There was never a single word about GOG releases, as if it didn't exist. This has changed, GOG is mentioned in update blogs. They even stated that the GOG update will soon follow after the next one has been released to Steam. This improvement in communication is the best change in my opinion. :)

Well, it is indeed good to read something about GOG in their blogs. I really hate when devs sell here but are constantly ignoring the GOG version and it's community in their news (and even in their patches) and make you feel like a 2nd class customer (but they sell you the game at the same price as in other platforms)

About updates, i am not against a better polished patch before getting it here, but not if that means months later than Steam. 2 weeks, even a month? That's ok for me, but i got the feeling, reading other threads, that between 1.21 and the latest one the waiting was 2-3 months?

Anyway, pleased to meet a backer, can we know what number it is you in case we are able to find a note or a cairn? Do you have a little story for us to read? :D

In a not related question, do you know if the devs have ever thought of letting us change the wolves fight interaction for a key instead of mouse button? I am very frustrated of having to smash like that, my mouse is not a gamepad and my fingers are not as quick as they were before. I really hate that system. Also, what about letting pc players to assign keys to specific items? I am thinking on weapons, for instance, it's weird to have to loop through rifle, flare gun, bow...whatever just to get my stones or back quickly to another tool when i suddenly face a wolf, for example :S

Ok, all I wanted to know was if I was getting jibbed. I don't like steam, so when I can I try to buy only GOG if the option exist.

I like steams recent, official response to free speech though, but they still have some policies that I don't really find acceptible.

1) such as how lame their "family" sharing library actually is. I can't play a single player game while my brother plays something else that's single player on my library at the same time? that's a lord of horse poop.

2) then steam also has a terrible policy on how to ban people. permanent in some cases, which is unacceptible that even 60 years from now i'll still be banned from their steam specific forums pages for talking about something with a game.

3) they still require sexy games to tip-toe inside their store, even though violence doesn't have the same restrictions.

so those 3 things makes me think that i'd rather spend my money here, even if The Long Dark cost more on gog.com (lowest proce here was 15, lowest and recent sale on steam was like 8)

I like that GOG.com doesn't force sexy games to tip-toe around, and can even upright put the game as-is on the site. Even if steam fixed those 3 things, I feel like the fact that they needed fixing tells me enough about them.

Glad it's appreciated. I've a warm heart for this game, although I'm not playing it a lot currently (waiting for the new content update with real-time cooking).

Now I think about the 6 weeks wait for the update was an exception. Most were within 4 weeks (which includes all hot fixes which each take 4-7 days).
The 2-3 month update was one were we did receive the update but some late hot fixing was required for e few unfixed bugs. That version however didn't never on GOG till the next major update got released which in corporated it.
If I'm not mistaken that was right before Hinterland started spending more attention toward GOG and our community, probably because a lot of felt outrageous for being completely ignored (on the official forums they kept saying they we're working on the GOG release, in reality that version never got released as stand alone version / update). I'm glad that they changed after this event. Everything in better now. :)

About the mouse / keyboard options. I actually don't know. They've build in some options for people with handicaps.
It' would be interesting to see these implemented too. I would suggest to go to the suggestion section on the Hinterland forums and check if it has been suggested yet.

I want to buy this game, but what version is available now? It's strange that there is no this information on the purchase page.

Currently the version on GOG is 1.30 which is the version previous to the update released in the last ~24 hours (1.33). I own this one on steam but I bought it for my misses on GOG during the recent sale. Unfortunate because she was excited for the update, I just checked hers for her on galaxy and through the web page and it's not updated yet. Shame they put so much effort into doing the simultaneous release but gog seems to be left out. Not the end of the world though.

The game comes DRM free regardless so I will probably just copy mine to her for now. Can't really help anyone else though D:

The GOG release will be released together with WeGame which both will follow after the other platforms have been released.

FWIW, the GOG version has been updated to the latest version (1.33) just about 24 hours after steam received the same update.

Also, the game is great. Best game I've played in a long while.

You are right! Thanks, update notifications are not working for me (again) during all the sale.

I wonder if this just happens to some people or what, but i'm glad i bought the game in time to download the previous 1.30 version to keep both the old cooking system and have time to learn the new system in a separate save.

I don't have time at the moment but damn this is going to be great! :D

And another update arrived, the 1.34 hotfix.
Seems like this one too was 24 hours later than Steam which probably just is the 24 hour testing period of GOG.
