Hi guys,
I bought this game: GOG version now and years ago the original one. Ok as far as I remember the original version on an old PC is really smooth but this GOG one it could be a choppy pain at least for my hardware+software configuration.

First of all my current config: Radeon 5850, Dual Core CPU and Win 8.

I read here about T&L executable: please remember the TL exe is the hardware full details version of the game, the other one is the D3D emulation file (!!!). Of course the emulation exe will work on any machine but your target is to try to execute the TL one. Again: the TL exe is the FULL details game.

The bad thing is that TL exec in Win8 is a true choppy pain and the other exec in Win8 is a 'minor' choppy pain but also far far far away from the real game. By considering my configuration here follows my experiments.

Win8 default both exe choppy and pain, the game is almost unplayable after some hours when the city grows larger. Just to report an example you'll find yourself in clicking a lot of times to be understood from the game. Definitely it's not the REAL game. I do not know if it's a GOG version fix for Win8 or so but anyway it's unplayable and frustrating.

Win8, executable run in the WinXP or Win7 mode: that's it, the real game. Smooth smooth, real time response everything glides everywhere. That's the way the game must be played. The TL executable can be fully loaded and playable at full screen with all the REAL details (look at the light from the windows). Anyway this mode will show some graphic glitches but maybe with an nvidia card ti's not the same.

Linux + Wine, fast and smooth but there is some rendering problem with many black screen and the buildings are all black. So it's not speaking as a test (but this try suggested to me to set in Win8 the compatibility mode :) ).

I hope you find these lines useful.

For GOG developers: is it possible to have in win8 plain execution the same performance of Win7 and WinXP mode?

Regards.

Nah my Nvidia card still has graphical glitches unfortunately, typically strange borders when buying/selling items (some of the carts are cut off), and sometimes the internal map is screwed when inside a building. Also sometimes the pictures for the descriptions for upgrades etc. are either black or otherwise corrupted. This is on XP btw.

Which is a shame, as I agree that the T&L mode definitely looks better (apart from the glitches) than the standard (non-T&L one).

Also, I find that if I play Nuremberg, once that gets to a decent size, the non T&L mode slows down a LOT, to the point it's almost unplayable - yet the T&L version still works at a decent speed (albeit with occasional glitches). Which is an even bigger shame since that's the only map you can build almost everything (other maps you have to be fast, and even then after about 30 years the map's full as far as businesses are concerned - I typically have a palace and residence by then otherwise I wouldn't be able to build them either). But this could be due to my crappy machine (although it's much faster than anything at the time the game came out).

Would be good if GOG could fix these somehow, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's not simple - after all, these glitches shouldn't happen in the first place, so maybe the exe was always buggy?

Maybe it's a case of the Guild devs using non-standard API calls for the graphics cards? I've tried tweaking my NVidia card a fair bit, but I can't fix it - so I either live with the glitches or use the slower mode. In cities other than Nuremberg the speed is fine anyway, at least on my machine.
