Well, I started to play this again today and played through a full generation as a Joiner. I'm still amazed at how engrossing this game is!
But my question is where do I get "fillings" without actually buying a Smithy to make some and cart them to my Sawmill? I couldn't find anywhere that would sell me some. However, when I hired someone to run my Sawmill, they were able to get some easily.
And this also made me realize that hiring someone to run any of my businesses made me impatient with their production choices. I fiddled with the production percentage sliders, but it didn't seem to work as well as I'd liked. I kept thinking "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself!"
Anyway, I could go on with the brilliance of this game.

I suppose you mean "fittings".
I suggest checking out the marketplace, that has pretty much everything; fittings can be bought at "Wood & Iron".
(As for AI-controlled masters getting goods out of thin air, I've noticed it once that they very well *can* buy them even in shops where they are produced but not sold... so yeah.)
