If I try to save, and click beside a "1." number, an entry from encyclopedia is read instead, so I'm unable to save my game progress :-(

You followed these steps?
1. Open the Oracle by clicking on the circle in the upper left of screen
2. Click on Disk button
3. Click on Save
4. Click on the Number 1 (Underscore cursor will start to blink)
5. Type Name
6. Hit Enter Key
I know you likely know these steps but I thought I would list them.
It seems as if these steps should work for you, but if they do not I will try to help and I am sure others will as well.
Hope this helps you out a bit.

Thanks, the catch was to click On the number, not beside it. I have read game manual and its instructions for saving a game appeared not quite clear to me.

you should give him +1 point and mark his post as a solution then (just hover mouse cursor over his post and necessary controls will appear), look at him I'm sure he's been through hell and back to get you such lengthy and complex guide to solve your thorny prob and all he gets is just "thanks" :D:D co rikas tomiiku, ne? :D
