As the title says. I generally like horror games. But from everything that I have read about i, it sounds extremely unpleasant and depressing. Everyone says, great writing, characters. But is it all any *fun*? What Susan goes through and is forced to do just sounds too unpleasant to be any fun. And isn't that the point of video games, in the end?

Thoughts?
It depends on your definition of fun.
- If you think good stories and deep characters are fun - The Cat Lady is super-fun.
- If you like the feeling when you have to go to work and you can't leave the game because you don't want to leave the character in this terrible place she is (won't tell you where because I don't want to spoil it for you) - this game is fun.
- If you like light yet rewarding puzzles that won't stop you from learning the story for too long - this game is fun.
- If you think Silend Hill series is fun - you'll probably find The Cat Lady fun (at least if you focus on the story, not the fighting - Susan holds real gun only twice in the game).
About depressive themes - yes, this game deals with depression in a very serious and mature way - but overall it's a story of restoration and building a new life on the ruins of the old one. There are better and worse endings, but there is no "doom-and-gloom" one - there is at least a spark of hope. Always.
Also, it's not a Frailty type of story - whatever terrible things Susan has to do - she does it in self-defence.
If you're not sure yet - name some horrors you like, I'll try to address to those.
Yes, this game is fun.
It has some heartwarming moments, it also has some funny moments, like the pest control man's wife. She's THAT beautiful. But there are even better ones, like Mitzi's emergency, when Susan's taking a bath.

Because the writing is good, you'll enjoy the story.
Because there are many intense moments, like the first parasite and Elizabeth, you wish to know how this game will continue.
Because of the parasites, you want to help Susan. (The first one really shows that they NEED to be stopped!)

And if you do really well and did everything right, you'll be rewarded with the best ending possible, which will make you cry. The game is depressing, but then the best ending feels so rewarding...

It's a wonderful piece of software and I really recommend it. I bought it on impulse, when I saw the "This week on gog"-video on youtube. I also like the odd choice of graphics.
I only wish there were more surreal scenes.
but in the end, never regret the purchase.
I was a bit unsure whether to get this game or not, but I am very glad I did. The game tells a wonderful story with characters that feel real and you can connect with and feel for. The voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard. The art and visual style is unique (to me at least). It is easily one of my top five favorite games on gog and it is certainly worth it for the price although the game may not be for everyone.

I was a bit nervous that the game would be nothing more than a snuff game or one that was gory for the sake of twisted people that enjoy such things, but it wasn't.

The music is also top notch. I think they hired a rock band to compose the music for this.

In the end it depends on what sort of play style you consider fun. What it tries to do it does well. If you are still unsure you can always try the demo.

I quoted this post because it stated clearer what I felt, although the other posters said many things I agree with in regards to the game.

You should buy this game now especially since it is on sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been playing it non-stop for several hours and am only quitting because I have to get some sleep to go to work tonight.

Love the art style. Love the dialogue. Love the pacing. Love how different it is from the cookie cutter crap being shoveled out nowadays.

Please do yourself a solid and buy this game.

Chapter One alone will hook you. Seriously.

You may want to try Downfall from the same author. It's not as polished and innovative as The Cat Lady and it puts you in a perspective of totally different individual (one you may already know) but it's how I fell in love with Harvester Games productions.
Try the demo, watch some Youtube videos if you want...
maybe i've just stayed away from adventure games too long, but while the story and atmosphere are very compelling, the game itself has been tedious and frustrating. constant trial and error, running back and forth trying everything to get just a little further, repeating the same steps and dialogue over and over. i find myself too frustrated to continue playing. not to mention bored.
Chapter 1 almost put me off the game. It's too trippy, and its objectives are unclear. It's only in the hospital that the game really takes off, especially once you learn who the first Parasite is. The game itself is not very difficult. Scenes are confined to several screens at most, and there are no more then a few items you can interact with on each screen. You'll want to save your game often, though, as there are dialogue decisions and consequences that can prevent you from getting the best ending.

If you like moving left and right blindly hoping to bump into something that'll give you a key to move on then it's a blast.
