Gaunathor: Hey, don't diss Sea Monster, that was my first G-movie! Well, granted, that alone doesn't make it any good, but the main problem was, that the script was written for King Kong, not Godzilla.

In any case, it is still much better than my second G-movie, 'Godzilla vs Megalon' (or 'King Kong - Dämonen aus dem Weltall' as it is called here).
My first one was Mothra :) True, Megalon sucked pretty bad... but at the time I watched it for the first time I was pretty crazy about insects, so the insectoid monster made the movie pretty watchable.
The one that I like and nobody else seems to enjoy is Gigan.

Gaunathor: I finished Episode 1 last night, and am not sure what to make of it.

The story is quite interesting, and the music and graphics are pretty good. The voiceover, on the other hand, is quite lacking in some areas (though I've heard much worse before). The puzzles range from 'painfully obvious' to 'I have no idea why I'm doing this'.
For example, I'm making a couple pictures of the victim, but I can't do anything with those for quite a while. In the end, one of those pictures is entirely useless, because it is never needed. I was expecting a puzzle to find out the meaning behind what I photographed (trying to avoid spoilers here), but it never happens.
Then there are the bugs. Mostly graphic bugs when moving around. On several occasions, I was afraid that the game might hang. Especially when Erika was walking through the air again.

Well, we'll see if Episode 2 is better, when I get around to it later today.
Strange - I got only one bug in the first episode (map screen froze). And one graphic glitch with Erica's breast (it was pretty hillarious, seeing her boobs move on their own while she was talking :)
Those things you have to do... I guess it's just Phoenix trying to emulate a real investigation :) Art of Murder had this kind of 'investigating for the sake of investigating'.

Novotnus: The one that I like and nobody else seems to enjoy is Gigan.
I like Gigan's design. It is very unique. As for the movie, it's more of a guilty pleasure for me. Some parts of it are pretty good (the premise of the story, the battles, the Godzilla Tower), while other parts are just stupid (like the wig, they are trying so hard to pass off as real hair, or that Godzilla and Angilas could hear the sound of a tape recorder hundreds of kilometers away). However, I haven't seen the movie in years, so I might be misremembering some things.

The only copy currently available here is based on the TV edition, which is missing part of the left and right side of the picture. It's also German-only. I'd really prefer the original. The German dubbing is usually okay quality-wise, but they occasionally changed the meaning of sentences or added completely new ones. For example, in 'Destroy all monsters' they say, that Frankenstein is behind the invasion of the Kilaaks. Not to mention calling all Kaiju Frankenstein-monster, or the renaming of Jet Jaguar and the first Mecha-Godzilla to King Kong.

I should have called it animation bugs, not graphics bugs, because that's what it actually is.

For example, when I try to sit down on Erica's desk, she would sometimes sit behind her chair, instead of on it. When leaving the interrogation room, Erica would open the door, move slightly forward (but still stay within the room), close the door, and then move right into the wall.
When talking to others, Erica would sometimes look into a completely different direction. For example, I was talking to Gwen in order to get some evidence, but Erica had her back to Gwen during this, the whole time. How rude. ;) Lastly, there's the air walking. I had happened a few times in the HQ, and once in the morgue and the apartment of the victim. When this happened in the morgue, Erica actually kept standing in the air. I was very afraid, that the game might be hanging, because I hadn't saved in quite a while. Luckily, it kept going shortly after.

In Episode 2, I haven't seen any of this. This time, however, the game needed to load for several seconds (5-10), before the animations would start. That happened every time when I tried to manipulate an object in the world (but not in the inventory) or attempted to start a conversation.

Novotnus: Those things you have to do... I guess it's just Phoenix trying to emulate a real investigation :) Art of Murder had this kind of 'investigating for the sake of investigating'.
In that case, I would have expected... more. Writing reports. Calling forensics, so that they could take a look at the new found evidence. Actually telling somebody, that you have found new evidence. Often enough, that evidence just disappears into your pockets. Well, at least it got better in Episode 2. We finally started to investigate what the *spoiler* on the victim in Episode 1 means.

I'm also getting quite suspicious of someone we met while stealing flowers. There are just too many coincidences regarding this person. I could be wrong though.

In any case, I think we should move to the Cognition subforum, if we want to continue this part of the discussion. This thread has stopped being about The Cat Lady several posts ago.

I have a polish VHS copy of the movie, which seems to be pretty well translated (got lots of movies in my Godzilla collection when video rental stores were dying here, some time in mid-90s). No Frankenstein nonsence, no renaming, no messing with the lore.
That tape, if I recall correctly, was played through some alien device. If Gigan and Ghidorah could hear it in outer space, why not Godzilla and Angilas on the same planet? :)
And the wig? I don't remember anything about a wig... Of naive actions, I remember they put a drawing of themselves on an elevator and hide some explosives behind it...
Also, a nice Godzilla-related read: http://nesgodzillacreepypasta.blog.com/category/chap1/

We better not discuss Cognition if you haven't pleyed through it yet. I don't want to spoil it for you and I was very close do doing so before I realized I wrote something I shouldn't :) The plot is pretty nice for an investigation-thriller game and it would be a shame if I deprived you a chance to discover it by yourself :)

Novotnus: That tape, if I recall correctly, was played through some alien device.
Later in the movie, yes. However, if I recall correctly, the protagonists are playing it earlier in their apartment with a regular tape player, alarming Godzilla and Angilas.

Novotnus: And the wig? I don't remember anything about a wig...
One of the protagonists is wearing it. He's supposed to be a long-haired hippie, if I remember it right. They are trying to hide the fact, that it is a wig, with a headband, but it's too obvious.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. How could you mistake a poster for real people? Where did they even get the poster in the first place?

I'm half-way through. If I continue with this speed, I should be able to finish it tomorrow.

Now I remember. Yeah, pretty stupid. Just like Godzilla and Angilas having a chat (in English) on their way to Japan :)

Ah, this guy :) Haven't noticed \ payed attention. 'Yeah, he's a hippie, I get it, he pretends his boiled corn is a gun, that's a hippie thing to do, now let's move on to the plot' :)

Gaunathor: Yeah, that was ridiculous. How could you mistake a poster for real people? Where did they even get the poster in the first place?
The main character was an artist. He made it... Still, it was black and white - hard to take it for real people :)

Yeah, it's not a hard game. And, IMO, it gets better as you play.

At least that didn't happen in the German version.

I can already tell, that I liked the second episode more than the first.

Gaunathor: At least that didn't happen in the German version.
It's difficult to understand... they make weird noises (nothing like typical Godzilla roars) and if you listen very carefuly, you can make some words behind it (starts with 'Hey, Angilas!'). If that part was cut - it's only for the better :)
avatar
Gaunathor: ...but I don't remember this.
Either there was a scene of him drawing the poster or I simply assumed he did it :)

Chapter 3 is great composition-wise.

There is a scene, during the battle, where G and Angilas "talk" to each other, but it is only screeching. No intelligible words.

In the original version they had a comic-style bubbles. Here's a transcript:
Godzilla: Hey. Anguirus!
Anguirus: What do you want? (crawls to Godzilla)
Godzilla: Somethin' funny's going on. You better check. (Motions his left arm forward)
Anguirus: Oh, yeah! (crawls away)
Godzilla: Hurry.
Scene Two (Godzilla and Anguirus swimming towards Japan.)
Godzilla: Hey, Anguirus, come on! There's a lot of trouble ahead. (Points his hand forward in a straight direction) That way!
Anguirus: Okay.

Novotnus:
Just finished the game myself for the first time. I really, really liked it, but I have a question, or a couple. I'm quoting (=calling) Novotnus, as he seems to know every last bit of this game throughout, maybe he can help?

I understand what the Queen of Maggots was (an entity that lives on people's desperation, etc), but what was her motive to help Susan? Had Susan fulfilled every one of her wishes (that is, wipe out the parasites), what would've the Queen gained by that? These parasites were very nasty people: if anything, I felt they were the Queen's minions: puppets who would nest even more suffering in the world for the Queen to feed, had they continued to live. Or did I understand this character wrong entirely?

More importantly, I was left a bit puzzled about the whole "parasites" deal. Are these just regular maniacs, or were they supernaturally or otherwise drawn to Susan? Did they pick on Susan by mere accident, or was there a bigger motive as to why they would target her? I mean, when you think about it, Susan's not exactly an important character for the world. She has no friends, no family: no one who cares about her. What made her so important all of a sudden: important enough to get the attention of not one, but several serial killers?

I guess what I'm asking is, what was it about Susan that suddenly made her important enough to gain the attention of both the Queen, and the parasites?
I allowed myself to rearrange your questions, to make my ramblings a little more reasonable :)

All I can offer is my interpretation of the Parasites:
Parasites are people, who have some insight into the Other World or even have their own places \ doubles in that world. X. has twisted theatrical scene, reflecting his evil and artistic mind. Cannibals have the mansion on the edge of the worlds. Carpenter has a ruined shipyard (maybe he works \ worked in a shipyard? he's pretty mysterious, so we can't really tell much about him).
My guess would be - Susan attracted the Parasites (whether they were fully aware of it or not is up to debate) by entering the Other World after her suicide. Or attention Susan got from the Queen attracted them - which leads us to...

Maybe the Parasites were playing their own games with the Queen (obiective: kill\hurt\break Susan) and failed?
Maybe the Queen wanted to give Susan hope by helping her to defeat the Parasites and break her in their showdown?
If the Queen feeds on Susan's depression, maybe she wanted to keep her alive (so: prevent her from another suicide attempt) to continue feeding on her?
My favourite interpretation is the first one: each Parasite playing his own game.
And one more interesting point: Queen appears in Downfall, which is set in the same universe and plays a very different (less sinister) role there.
Alright, that actually helps. I too thought of this:

Novotnus: Maybe the Queen wanted to give Susan hope by helping her to defeat the Parasites and break her in their showdown?
But when you visit the cabin for the last time (where the Queen wants you to blow out one more candle), she seemed happy for Susan's achievements so far. Or, she could be just masking her disappointment over the fact that Susan had fared better than she had hoped. Actually, come to think of it, that might be why she chose Susan: perhaps the Queen thought, that she would constantly fail, and since she's immortal, she would fail again and again, contributing to an endless supply of desperation?

Anyway, I guess some things can be left for interpretation. A great game, and a great story. I'm glad I got the chance to play through this.

I guess the Queen is playing bigger game here (if you haven't yet - you can see her appearance in Downfall in the demo).
Maybe she'll tell us more about herself in the next game that is hopefully coming :)
