Both the in-game tutorial and any walkthroughs I find are telling me to press the F key in the listed rooms to check for infection, but the F key does nothing as I try it repeatedly in these rooms. Am I missing something? This seems to be very poorly explained.

OK. You have to push the space bar first. I missed that.
