I own the retail CD version, and the Steam version (a gift); but neither version actually runs. The game starts, then invariably hangs/locks up (keeping the mouse focus).

It only runs on Windows XP 32-bit. Sorry :(

Thanks for the confirmation. I wonder why that is? (does anyone at GoG know?). Most 32 bit software (but we know it's not all), can work via Window's WOW64 emulation. Does this mean that no one running Window 7 can run the Bard's Tale?

* I can build an XP32 box if that's the solution. Thanks again.

** Might I suggest a minor change to GoG's game card? That the games with this particular problem be labeled as XP 32 bit only.

I think it's most likely related to the fact that Windows XP 64 was sort of the neglected child in the MS OS family and was never properly supported. Sadly, this issue is present ONLY on Win XP 64. It runs fine on the other 64-bit Windows flavors. Sorry to break it to you like this.

edit: Look in the PC requirements on the bottom :).

Not a problem; I knew that when I resorted to it; XP64 is really server 2003 under the hood (AFAIK).
Why is this, when I can play games like Age of Empires?
