twm: I've encountered a few random freezes in Skara Brae. Very annoying, and even more annoying because the game only saves progress when you actively Remove characters from your party at the AG. Is this issue under investigation? Running Win8.1.

Thanks for the MESSUI solution. I'm reluctant to install an emulator specifically to run BT1-3, but if that's what it takes...

By the way, for me, the disk images are located at C:\GOG Games\The Bards Tale\Res

jsjrodman: Seems like you lost some of the path there.
My eventual solution was to play them on the Mac. No lockups.

The MESS solution worked reliably, but it had the following things I didn't like:

* MESSUI would crash if i tried to save state
* Accurate disk load speeds were too slow for me, especially without an onscreen indicator of disk activity
* Toggling warp-speed handled the load times, but keystrokes for warp were only available during partial emulation
* During partial emulation, escape instantly quit the emulator losing my game

All in all, it was just a bit too error-prone for me. Maybe someone else has a better set of solutions.
For the escape situation, add -confirm_quit to the commandline. (Works at least for sdlmess on Linux) In Windows, you can do this by editing the properties of the shortcut. Alternatevely, find mess.ini and change confirm_quit to 1. Now, in order to quit, you must press Escape and then Enter, making it much less likely to happen by accident.

Bard's Tale 3 should also be playable in AppleWin, which runs on Windows and happens to work well in Wine if you're using something else.

Ah, that's much better than what I cooked up, I was unmapping the
escape action in the tab-menu inside MESS, but didn't know how to
persist the configuration.

In the end, I mostly just played on the Mac laptop, which I did on the
train and bus and so forth. The built-in emulator works fine on that
platform, even if that removes conveniences like save-states.

I finished 1, 2 (Destiny Knight), and am now in Tarmitia in the Thief
of Fate. Good times.
My BT1 freezes while I'm roaming the city, and I'm unable to shut down the app with CNTL-ALT-DEL; I have to restart my PC.

daisy991: I've been trying to play the classic version of Bard's Tale 1, but it keeps freezing during character creation. Any suggestions? I have Windows 7, but I'm running the game in Windows XP compatibility mode as an administrator.

JediOre313: I am having freeze ups on The Bard's Tale I, but it is usually when I'm traveling about the city. Last night my party defeated enemies in a house and the treasure screen froze.

I hate the thought of re-installing the game for I've got two parties all between fourth and eighth level.

Any one else having this problem?

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and the game is opened as an administrator.
Try going into in game options and turn all off ie no arrows in boxes , works for me, been playing 20 minutes and not 1 freeze

Oh dear. Don't. Just don't.
