Hey everyone,

We're trying to collect more information on an issue that is preventing some players from starting the game. The symptom of this issue is that the game will simply show a black screen or go unresponsive, usually right after the initial legal text.

We think that at least some of these problems are being caused by users with certain special characters in their Windows username, and potentially specific Windows region or language settings as well.

If you are getting this specific type of crash on starting the game, please try making a new Windows user account using only Latin/English characters in the username (i.e. "User"), and start the game using that account. Let us know if this work-around fixes the problem for you.

Additionally, if you are experiencing a crash/freeze/black screen on starting the game and cannot get past that point, can you please post the following:

Your Windows version (7/Vista/8/8.1/10/etc.)
Whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit OS version
Your system specifications (CPU, video, memory)
Your graphics driver version
Your current Windows username
Your Windows language setting
Whether your Windows account is an administrator or standard user

If the work-around we suggested above fixes the issue for you, then please also tell us what Windows username you used to do so.

Additionally, if any of you are getting a crash fitting this description, but have found a way around it, we'd love to hear what you did to get things working. It's possible there may be multiple causes or solutions.

Thanks much everyone! We know that this issue is frustrating, but we're trying to gather as much info as we can to get a fix going as soon as possible.
Windows 10 Pro 64bit
64-bit OS version
Your system specifications (CPU Intel i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4ghz, RAM 8gb, AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 6gb ram,)
Your graphics driver version - Radeon 18.9.3
Your current Windows username - not really sure, it's either an email address or Raark71 either way, I am not changing it.
Windows language setting English
Windows account is an administrator

***Since sending this post I have done the following...

Updated graphics driver, changed computer name (not windows account name) and that is about it, oh and I restarted the PC, game seems to work fine now.

Thanks for everyone among the GOG user base and elsewhere for helping us track down this bug. The great news is we were able to fix it for patch 2!

Edit: Phew, after a Verify/Repair it seems to work again. Something must have gone wrong during the patching.

Was:
I did not have the issue before, played the game a lot, but now after patch 2 I get a black screen on start.

Win7 Home Premium 64bit
German Language
Username Solaris
Admininstrator Account
Intel i7-6700K, 16 GB RAM, NVidia GTX 970
Driver 399.24
Also remember to not use FDDShow for the H264/5 codec, use microsoft's instead...
I am unable to start The Bard's Tale (not Bard's Tale 4, not Bard's Tale 1988) because of the black start screen.

I launch the game from Galaxy or from the game icon itself, the screen goes black and the computer restarts. Nothing is shown before the computer restarts, just a black screen, a few seconds pause, and the kernel panic message.

I hvae uninstalled and reinstalled the game with no changes in behavior.

I am running MacOS 10.14.5, so I cannot answer the questions for Windows systems.
