Now that v1.3 is out on GOG, have they made it easier (aka NORMAL) to have multiplayer matches? I have heard with the Steam version, that you can connect through Steam, and somehow go through them to have seamless multiplayer matches in v1.3.

Would love to play this game with my son. All previous attempts at setting up multiplayer have not worked, and is very frustrating to say the least. My son and I are really hoping with v1.3 that we could connect, since we both have the GOG version.

Thoughts?

I was never able to play multiplayer with a friend, only on dedicated servers that were running TShock. I don't know if they fixed it or not, but I would like to try it out (either hosting or joining).
It should be very easy to play multiplayer with games that work like Terraria, the most complex part might be setting up port forwarding on a router if you want someone over the internet to connect to your PC/server.

If you gave some details on how you and your son are trying to play, ie your network setup (over the internet? Over a LAN, router etc?), I'm sure someone would reply giving you some quick instructions on getting it to work.

We play through a wireless router (Netgear 7000). Why do we have to do a complicated process to play the game multiplayer? I know this has been brought up a ton in the past, but now this is more of a sticking point with me, as Steam has an easy way to play with your people on your friends list. Yet, the GOG version requires Port forwarding and/or a separate application to do basically the same thing. Very annoying.

sadly the devs weren't able to add Galaxy.api multiplayer features like they did with the Steam version for 1.3 for a few reasons but the big one was probley they probley didn't have access to the API till late in the updates development, now that doesn't mean they won't once they get the bugs in 1.3 straightened out and the Mac and Linux ports squared away. It may take sometime though since one of the features of Galaxy's multiplayer API is the ability to play with those who use Steam and how the Steamworks multiplayer in 1.3 currently works is you or someone else sets up their world and handles hosting duties and the persons joining click "join" on the hosts profile. So it may be hard to set it up so that GOG users can play with Steam users using this method..

Plus there are only 2 to 3 guys who currently do the coding on the game(previously it was just Red and he was pulling 72 hour days when working on the updates) and they just spent the better part of a year working their asses off to get this update done and working on the Mac and Linux ports. So while the current set up on GOG isn't ideal, they could use some slack.

Without getting into a GOG vs Steam thing, or how much a developer decides to support one or the other (which seems to be the real issue here since Galaxy), this should help you get going with some multiplayer over a LAN.

Open the game and choose to host/create a multiplayer game (this will be called the Host/Server computer), entering any details it requests. Then on any other computer on the network that wants to join, open the game and look for a multiplayer/join game option.

Here you will have to enter the IP of the computer hosing the game and a port (leave the port on a default value if you haven't changed it when creating the host). It may also ask for a password, which you may have set on the host. From there it should attempt to connect and join the game instance on the host.

Problems you may encounter is different game versions not working well or at all with others.
Firewalls blocking the program from connecting, on either the host or client side.
Not knowing what the Host's IP address is.

If you don't know the IP address for the Host on the LAN do the following. On the host PC, Run (WinKey+R) "CMD". This will open a DOS like text window. In that type "ipconfig" and it will display some text. Look for a line that says "IPv4 Address...." at the end of that line will be a number (such as "10.0.0.8" or "196.0.0.9" as examples) which will be the LAN address for the host, that is the IP number you enter on the client to join the game on the host.

The only difference between doing this over a LAN and the internet is, there you connect to the Host's "internet" IP not the LAN IP and you will have to tell the router to forward the port chosen when creating the host to the host's LAN IP (port forwarding is only needed on the host side, ie if you're hosting over the internet). That's also very easy but exactly how to do it depends on the router/firmware in question. You don't need anything else like programs or websites etc for either LAN or internet games.

So it's not really complicated, basically all you need to know is the IP address of the host computer (and password, port if changed), so the client can try connect to that IP where the game is being hosted.

We run on a network very like this. Are you sure you aren't overcomplicating things?

Start the game, go into multi, try to start, then Alt-Tab. Tell your firewall (Windows default, I'm guessing?) to allow communication. Might have to do this a time or two. Windows firewall doesn't configure it correctly all the time. Then repeat the same with the other computer.

We had severe lag and dropped connections, though, until we connected my machine with a Cat5 cable, even though I can play other multi games without it.

Incidentally, it doesn't take much of a machine to run a dedicated local host. Pretty much anything will work. We set it up on an old machine that was originally running Win98, upgraded to Win XP.

so you are saying you want to play whit your son wel just host the game and give your sone the IP + allow it in the firewall and antivirus dont say its hard its not its easy as just entering a few number on a Calculater if you play localy ten you dont need to port forwad

some thing tels me you dit not even try or dit not allow it on the firewall or have a shitty antivirus that is doing stuff that it dus need to do

look at this simple

PC1 - IP 192.168.0.120

PC2 - IP 192.198.0.130

PC1 is the host where you run the game using host and play

PC2 joins PC1 game by entering PC1 IP addres that is 192.168.0.120 if tis dus not work localy

check firewall
check antivirus some anti virus block things that te dont need to block like norton dus this a lot

if you dont know what your own local IP addres is ten you dit not even try
if your on windows open CMD.exe and enter "ipconfig" this wel tel you all you need to know for what your local IP is of the computer your on its not that hard realy poeple if your on linux ten i dont know how you are gone now what your IP is use google

dont tell me norton is not bad it is i know i dealt whit it way to many time
and you dont even need anti-virus on your PC if you know how to use the internet
and if you say you need one i wil only recommend 1 that dus what is must do and no other shit and you have full control advanced systemcare ultimate

i dont care that tis post is old i dont care that my english is bad

We were finally able to connect, using some of the suggestions earlier posts. Here we are at version 1.3.1.1, and STILL having to find/input the hosts IP address manually, and use Port forwarding. Ridiculous. It doesn't take a "brain" to figure out that the Multiplayer aspects of this game is just plain lazy coding (at least for the PC GOG edition... pocket edition, Steam edition doesn't suffer from this). For lots of folks, who only understand that connecting to the Internet and Multiplayer games is as simple as Google showing up, and using services like Steam/Origin/UPlay, this atrocity that we have to deal with on GOG with this version, would simply turn a lot of folks off. They aren't going to spend the time trying to figure out the somewhat more arcane details of trying to connect so they can play with their friends/family. They just want to play. Period.

Re-Logic and 505 Games really should be ashamed of this port for GOG. They can update with these new versions, add thousands of items, yet cannot take the X amount of time to properly code for Multiplayer? I call BS on this.

And Jim, "if you have a brain", perhaps you will use it for its intended purpose, and understand what this discussion is all about.
It would have been nice if the program simply displayed the host's IP, or gave an easy way to find it, rather than counting on people knowing one of the several methods of finding IP. And having the program try to work around your firewall is problematic, as that is what a firewall is supposed to prevent. Such workarounds would need frequent updating to deal with new firewalls, or even updates to firewalls. Worse yet, Terraria would correctly be identified as malware.

But I don't think it's just lazy coding. Scanning all IPs would be quite time consuming, particularly if you require TCP instead of just UDP. So the most common way of searching for game hosts is the host IP gets sent to a centralized server whose only purpose is to provide a place for clients to get the IP list of hosts. Problem is once that game gets old, or not as popular, or the company folds, that central server goes bye-bye, and if they did not provide a means of specifying the IP, the multi-player aspect is gone.

Sure, scanning for local hosts is quick. But LAN gaming, like we are doing, is getting pretty unusual. And if you are going to add in someone over the 'net, you need the more robust model anyway.
Does anyone know the IP address of a good multiplayer 'lobby' and its server thingy, say what you want but i find it frustrating to do this 'grind' all over again when i already have good progress on another platform (WiiU got to the 2nd mechanical boss) any help would truly be greatly appreciated. do multiplayer items carry over to single player or not also?
