Hello,

I have problems with terraria and error messages under Windows 10. I have a sd card as hard disk c. The folders My games and terraria are write-protected. It isn't possible to remove the tickmark for the write-protection. You can manually create and delete folders and files in these write-protected folders, which means that the user has enough permissions. Terraria must have problems with this write-protection!?

I can't create a char in terraria under windows 10. I installed terraria on a windows 7 pc and it was possible to create a char and a world. I copied these files to windows 10 and the char and world started. I got new error messages saving this char under windows 10.

It has nothing to do with windows defender or malware bytes. I registered these folders as exceptions.

Best regards,

Michael

Yeah, that kind of write protection is going to be a real problem for Terraria. Since it is a rogue like game that saves as you go any kind of write protection will cause real problems. For instance I noticed that the game does rolling backups and moves them to the trash as it goes. So it is going to need complete access to the hard drive for it to work properly.
I installed terraria on another windows 10 pc. There I could create a char, but the world list was empty!

That is because the world list of only games you created for yourself. You can create multple worlds and move your characters between the different worlds. If a friend is playing their character multiplayer you can play your character on their world. Different worlds can have different values, some will be corruption and some crimson.(although I'm playing one of the special world seeds right now from the release date)

Any constructive proposals for solution to be able to start a game and save it in terraria under Windows 10?

Are you for some reason not an administrator on that PC?
Have you tried right-clicking the game's exe/shortcut and clicking on Run as Administrator?

If that doesn't work, you might need to take ownership of the My Games folder. The inability to uncheck the read-only box makes me think that you're currently not the owner.

Gotcha: do you have any experiences with windows 10? I already tried to uncheck the read-only box, but it doesn't work. It is possible to create folders and files manually and to delete them in these write-protected folders. It doesn't seem to be a question of permission. Generally not being able to uncheck seems to be a kind of security concept of windows 10, but I am no programmer at all. Could it be possible that terraria was bad programmed? Terraria is the first and only game which has this kind of problem on my pc.

!!! I already played other games which use the same \my games folder without having any problems, e.g. Titan quest anniversary from gog !!!

Gog is selling terraria for windows 10, too! I already tried compatibility mode for windows 7 on windows 10 without success.

When you try to uncheck the read-only box, does this not work because the box is grayed out? Or does it allow you to uncheck it and Windows keeps setting it back to read-only?
If it's grayed out, I'm thinking this means you don't have full control over your PC, e.g. you're not an administrator.

Another thing you can check: Right-click the My Documents folder, click properties, click the Security tab.
In here you should see your username in the first box. Click it.
Check the box below that and see if Full Control is set to Allow.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the folder being read-only. I don't know why Windows 10 makes the My Documents folder (and every folder in it) read only, but it seems to do that for me as well. I have no issues with Terraria not being able to save.

-----------------

Edit: I did some digging, and apparently the read-only thing has to do with Windows 10 Defender's randomware protection.

If you happen to have Full Control (meaning we can rule out Windows denying you access), try reporting your problem on the official forums. There are a lot more people there, increasing your chances for help.

-----------------

Edit #2: You can also try turning this ransomware protection off and see if the problem disappears. I seem to have it turned off myself.
Click start, type in "controlled folder access" without quotes, press enter.
Click "off" in the following screen and test if Terraria can now save.

Gotcha: wow, cool. It was the ransomware protection. I googled and tried a lot, but I couldn't find this clue.
Thanks a lot! ;-) I am wondering, why terraria was the only game showing this problem?

Unfortunately my google search turns up a bunch of closely named "free" versions of the game that have virus embedded. That is probably what is setting it off.
abbayarra: I had this problem with the bought gog version. Terraria was the only game having this problem. I always have an active virus protection and an anti-malware program installed.

Perhaps it has to do with the game being built on older versions of .Net/XNA framework, but you'd have to ask the developers, I'm afraid. I'm not a programmer.
But at the end of the day, Terraria is an old game that predates WIndows 10, and with Microsoft constantly forcing unwanted updates for this OS, some programs are bound to break over time.

My biggest wonder right now though is why this problem isn't more wide-spread.
