Alternatively, chop down a tree, plant its acorn (hope you do get at least one acorn), start building down a stairway. Chop more trees if you run out of wood (hence: acorn).

Okay. Mine two blocks of anything. Put one block in the void. Walk on it. Put the other block below. Mine the block you're standing on, and put it below the block you're now standing on. Repeat until you get to the ground.
Now grab rope (you can find plenty) and raise your rope to climb back all the way up to the cloud.
