Before I start this, let me just say that my friend and I have been able to do multiplayer several times perfectly fine. He comes over often to hang out for the weekend and will bring his computer, and this past time right before he came over we were able to play perfectly fine. When he was here we were able to play fine. When he left we tried to do multiplayer and it won't connect. I'm running windows 7 and he's running 10.

I've tried to ping his address and it's saying that the ping is being received. He's checked his firewall and terraria is set to be allowed to go through. As far as I can tell nothign has changed. Any ideas?
If it works fine locally but not over the internet (and you know the IP of the host), then it's most likely a router setting. Whoever hosts will need to find out which router (s)he has and how to configure it to allow hosting Terraria over the internet. Since there are several thousand different types of routers out in the world, I'm not going to attempt to guess how to do this for you. You will need to know the specific make and model, which is often found on a small label.

Once you've figured out which router you're using, a quick google search of "<router name and model> port forwarding" should give you some guides on how to do this. You need to open a port for communication (usually TCP, but UDP may also be required). The default port for Terraria multiplayer is 7777.

IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU SHOULD ONLY OPEN THE PORT REQUIRED FOR TERRARIA.

Opening additional ports may make you vulnerable to hacking attempts, especially ports in the 0-1023 range.

Thanks for the reply! What confuses me is that he and I were able to play online perfectly fine before he came over last. We were playing online and then he came over and brought his computer so I could help him get windows 10 up and running. Since I got Windows 10 running on his computer it seems as though multiplayer has just given up the ghost.

In other words, before we upgraded to windows 10 we were able to play together online, but now that he's upgraded we cannot.
