tinyE: Do you have to fight the Wall of Flesh in Hell? I lasted 3 seconds because of down there you can barely move around AND you are surrounded by a million other baddies.
Yes. Trying to flee will get you dragged back (or killed if you use a Mirror).
This is one fight you simply can not handle without proper preparation (or a ton of luck).
Step 1: Ensure that you have either a long (700+ blocks at least for your first couple of tries) bridge or Lava Waders (Water Walking Boots + Obidian Skull + Lava Charm) and room to dodge/shoot. If using Waders make sure that you don't need to jump to retreat during the fight.
In any case, you really need to prepare the terrain for the fight as you
will be doing a retreating battle and it will take a while. The only way you're not going to do a retreating battle is by using weapons from late hardmode (Frost Moon, Duke Fishron, Martian Invasion or Moon Lord).
Step 2: Get a good weapon. Some useful options:
Yoyo: Cascade or Valor
Flail: Sunfury,
Boomerang: Flamarang
Sword: Not really any good ones pre-Hardmode for the Wall. But if you absolutely have to use one Night's Edge
Spear: The options are even worse than for swords.
Bow: Molten Fury or Hellwing Bow
Gun: Minishark or Phoenix Blaster
Magic: Demon Scythe, Book of Skulls or if you're using Meteor Armor: Space Gun (but only due to the combination being a ranged option with no ammo/mana cost)
Other: Star Cannon, if you've got a stack or two worth of Fallen Stars.
Personally I go for a Demon Scythe, as that deals solid damage and pierces enemies, effectively dealing a good deal of area damage in that fight. The downside is that the Scythe is a fairly rare drop from (non-Voodoo) Demons, but it's also a good spell for early/mid-hardmode, once you learn how to deal with the way the projectile works.
Do not forget to reforge to a decent modifier if you have the money.
Step 3: Get a good armor. Molten, Jungle (if using spells) or if you have Crimson in your world, Crimson Armor.
Step 4: Get a decent mix of accessories. And reforge them, with Warding or Menacing being the most overall useful options.
* A pair of speed boots, Lightning or Frostspark would be the best.
* If using Lava Waders, they can be equipped at the same time as another pair of boots. They're still good if you use a bridge as you may find that it was too short for your damage output.
* Obsidian Shield is massively useful if you're using Lava Waders as knockback can potentially put you in a bad spot. Still a solid pick if using a bridge.
* Band of Regeneration will help.
* Band of Starpower, Mana Regeneration Band and Mana Cuffs are all useful for a mage build
* Horseshoe if you're using a hellevator to get to the underworld quickly, otherwise anything else can take the spot with no issues.
Step 5: While not really that important, buff potions can help out a lot. Ironskin and Regeneration are the two easiest to get (Bottled Water and either Daybloom + Iron/Lead
ore or Daybloom + Mushroom) and they're very effective in keeping you in the battle. Fishing can provide you with ingredients for some even more useful potions like Endurance, Rage and Wrath.
And don't forget to bring some Healing Potions. Lesser Healing are not good enough, but you can try to fish in the honey pools in the jungle for some Honeyfins (120 healing) if you don't want to convert your Lessers to normal.
After all that it's basically just down to making sure you know which way the Wall is going to come from when you throw in the doll. If you're to the left of the centre WoF will come from the left and if you're to the right it will come from there.
Happy hunting.
