Like the topic says.
I killed EoC a couple dozen times and got the binocs. Yes, I know I was pretty lucky to get them that soon. But to say I was underwhelmed by their usefulness is an understatement. They only help out if you've already been there to leave a light source behind. So what's the point? Maybe to search for those single blocks of corruption or something? Updating your map almost twice the range while falling down mining shafts? But that was already done using Clentaminator, right? Tiles which were revealed by the spray appear not to be updated on your map unless you have a light source there anyway, and if you Clentaminated your world, you have shafts close enough together to not need the binocs.
Is there something I'm missing that makes the things worth keeping?
