A few years ago, I loaded this game and tested a few things. I discovered that Vampiric Touch was essentially useless as it gave you 0 temporary hit points.

I also found that the False Life spell stacked (unlike in D&D). By casting it repeatedly, you could get so many hit points that dying from hit points looked like it would be unlikely. Hence, this would allow a Sorcerer to tank rather nicely.

Did the Circle of Eight Modpack fix Vampiric Touch or nerf False Life in any version?

What other spells work differently from their tabletop D&D counterparts?
I don't recall ever noticing a problem with Vampiric Touch in Co8 8.0. It is a niche spell, though, since casting it from memory in melee combat triggers an AoO. So it is much more reliable to read a scroll or use a wand, since they don't trigger the AoO (it's a bug that is currently being looked at).

Remember though that it is a touch attack spell, so you need to actually hit your opponent for it to work. Thus having good melee stats is a must, which may or may not be a problem for your magic user.

I don't think I've ever used False Life, so can't say much there.

Have you actually been able to get a positive amount of hit points from Vampiric Touch? I remember testing it out on party members in the mod's starting area. I distinctly remember the touch attack hitting, doing something like 1d6 + level (or maybe level/2, but definitely not 1d6 * level/2), and giving the caster 0 temporary hit points (it actually showed up as a temporary effect).
