I remember when it came out, ToEE had a reputation for lousy performance.

The laptop I'm attempting to play the game on is not a gaming laptop, but is still more powerful than a 2003 computer. I have Win XP SP3, Pentium T4500 dual core @ 2.3ghz, 4gb ram, Nvidia GT320m video. My account is a local admin.

The main symptoms are slow responsiveness or lagginess in the UI. I hate hitting Esc to bring up the save menu. I hit Esc and then have to wait about 2 seconds for it to respond, but it feels much longer. Map and Journal are quicker but still a bit of a delay. If I click the ground to move my party, there is about a 0.5 second delay before the position circles appear on the ground. Zoning also takes a long time as it can take 5-10 seconds to load an area, even if I've already been in that area recently and the area is small (example: go to shop, leave, remember something I had forgotten, go back into shop).

In some dungeons (recently in the Moathouse) I also get terrible framerate (probably <15fps) in spots.

It is seeming like a lot of the lag is sound related. For instance, if a sound effect is playing, and I hit ESC, the sound effect finishes before the menu comes up.

I installed Co8 modpack to see if the bug fixes helped any with performance, but the performance is unchanged.

I've tried searching, but the majority of the performance-related info is from when the game came out, and I didn't see anyone else reporting this issue on the Gog forums.

I'll try some things with the sound, but wanted to see if anyone had some ideas/thoughts/experienced the same thing.
It's interesting that you think the issue is sound related but you didn't tell us what kind of sound (card, on-board, etc...) you have.

I don't remember any reputation for poor performance; overrun with bugs maybe, but not poor performance.
I'm actually on a much beefier computer than yours and having the same problem. The game is very laggy. Scrolling around the map is very choppy, and there is a long delay from the time I press escape until the menu actually shows up.

I'm on an i7, 6 gigs of ram, 64bit Win7, Radeon HD 5870.

What makes you think it's sound related? I'm using the onboard realtek sound.

Oops: Didn't realize how old this thread was. Anyone else had any performance issues with this game?

It should run fine most of the time, but not all the time.
There are places with choppy performance and even total freezes of a few seconds.
I get problems when in the elemental nodes, particularly the fire node. very laggy, total crashes and combat gets repeatedly stuck on one of my fighters finishing his attack but the game does not move on the the next character. I've just down loaded co8 madpck 7.5 nc and I hope that fixes things
I'm having the exact same problem as well. >< Frame rate drops every time I access an interface (hitting ESC for main menu, inventory, etc.). Frame rate drops even when I'm creating character.

This is so weird because I'm not even lagging in combat, just when I open an interface like the inventory or roll dialog and etc.

I really need help for this because the drastic frame rate drops made me vomit two times already and I'm just about ready to quit playing this game. Please, someone tell me there's a fix for this or that whether you've when through this yourself and found a fix. Tell me the steps.

I really love this game but my head hurts when I play for more than 10 minutes.
Are you using the Co8 mod? #1 problem solver is to install and play that mod rather than play vanilla.

If you did install the mod, and are still seeing the same issues, then your best bet is to join the forum and post a question here. You'll likely get an answer from one of the Co8 guys.
