I had this on disk many years ago and enjoyed playing the first part of the game. Then it degenerated into huge levels full of little rooms to be checked out. The problem was that they all contained 3 of one kind of mob and 2 of another, over and over and over again. Occasionally the kind of mobs changed, (did each floor have a couple of sets?) but always, always 3 and 2. With sensible character builds they weren't terribly difficult to deal with anyway, but once you had done 20 or so sets, you could take them in your sleep. I gave up out of sheer boredom with this in the end, which was a shame because I enjoyed other bits of the game. Now I've bought it again as part of a big RPG bundle. Has anything been done to sort this out? Is it worth loading it up and investing time in it again, or would I just be repeating essentially the same encounter again and again and again, again?

You might like the Co8 New Content patch.
It doesn't change the main story but adds a lot more stuff to do, including a whole new area after you finish the game.

You might also like the Keep on the Borderlands total onversion, also from Co8.
If you didn't like it then, you won't like it now. Basically the bugs have been fixed, so the game is a lot more stable. Some new content added under the hood, some nice bells and whistles, but nothing that has any impact on the mid/late game.

However, it truth ToEE is more like a sandbox than a railroad. So if you want to move on and skip a level, there is often a way to do so and still advance the plot towards the final BBEG fight. Part of the fun of ToEE is realizing just how much freedom the devs built into the game to allow the player to do what they want.

If you found it too easy, try doing a solo run with no reloads. I've soloed the game as a human Bard, and I have read about ppl doing it with a dwarven cleric specializing with the linked chain.

With the Co8 mod, the Temple factions can go on defensive stances, which causes them to consolidate forces for a big fight. I think it improves what you complained about a fair deal.
