Ok, first time I ever played this was with a full party, 2nd was with a smaller party (3 or 4), and now I really want a solo try.

I read a great thread about this I'm going to model after - it was leveling Paladin to 3, then switching to Cleric from there.

My question is this:

In the first town, at the church, the priest on the lower level has a very expensive holy weapon for sale, that is wayyy above what you can afford at that time. If you come back later after acquiring enough gold to get it, he no longer sells it.

Is there any trick to getting this early on? Or is it just a tease?

I honestly can't even remember what weapon type it is.

From what I recall, in vanilla the Holy Mace is always available, but if you install the Co8 mod, the inventory of Calmert is set to only have a ten percent chance of the mace being for sale.

Also I think all merchants reset their inventory every week or something. So you might regularly try back with Calmert to see if he has it.

Ok, well I've always used Co8 as it is an easy way to fix all the bugs.

Every time I played he had the holy mace (thanks, forgot what specific weapon it was) for sale, but obviously in the beginning you have no where near the gold needed to get it.

Every game I returned later, it was no longer there. Which doesn't matter that much (if I recall correctly) because i will be specializing in a different weapon (Guisarm) and - I don't remember exactly - but I think I had good enough weapons at that point anyway.

I'm planning a solo run.

I was just wondering if there was a trick to get it early, without the gold needed, that isn't a cheat (if it's an in-game trick I don't consider that a cheat - it's not like console commanding or anything).

I don't think it's possible, I was just wondering if anyone knew of some way they figured out.

Note, if you do all the fetch & carry missions and have high charisma, you can get a similar holy sword early.

Haha, yeah I tried that once (killing him to get it ... I think) in one of my early playthroughs, and if memory serves me correctly I ended up getting destroyed. Besides, I can't imagine a quicker way to fell my Paladin even if I won.

So ok, it's just there as a tease for good characters and a tough battle for more evil-minded or neutral characters.

I don't really need it, just wondered if it was possible (in a GOOD way ...) to make the beginning solo areas easier.

Jarmo, your solo Paladin/Cleric thread is great and is what I'm going to model this solo run after ...

I posted in it as to the best attributes to focus higher scores on at Char creation - seeing as you'd need both good scores for a Paladin and also a Cleric for that build. I was going to post the attributes for a Paladin I made long ago, however now I'm having major issues getting Co8 to work (just crashes at startup every time). SO, I guess I'm going to re-dl ToEE from my library, fresh install, fresh install of Co8 (8.1 is the newest but seems buggy ... never had issues with 7.6 until today) - so unless I can figure out where my stored characters I've already built are and back them up, I imagine I'll lose them all with a fresh install.

Thanks. But it has been a couple of years and I didn't even remember having done a solo run before that old thread popped up.

But I'd say you need just enough STR and DEX to get that... improved attacks of opportunity? More opportunity? What was it? And cleave, cleave is super.

Enough charisma to get that one girl in the village to marry you (but you better leave her waiting, or get a useless companion you can't get rid of), don't remember how much that was though.

Rest of the stats don't matter much.

Since you can, I'm sure I rolled my stats, and then rerolled about a thousand times, until I got real good ones.

And remember to pick craft magic arms and armor and craft magic items feats as soon as you can. You'll be wanting a funky superweapon with multiple enchantments.

Yeah, the DEX thing gives you extra AoO depending on the + bonus for the attribute score.

I rolled 2 different starting characters for hours, and couldn't even beat the damn intro fight (bandits at the caravan), so I gogled a bunch and ended up console cheating as a last resort to give all stats 18. Halfway through fetch quests when on level up I realized that somehow that screwed up my characters other traits a bit. I guess maybe its a bug with the Co8, but anyway I feel too much guilt console cheating so I'm going to restart.

So, obviously STR, DEX are important for battle and AOO (especially with a long reach weapon), and WIS, CHA are vital for both a Paladin and Cleric ...... I can see INT being not very important for this build, but what about CON? I thought that was necessary as well?

INT is probably more important actually.
You'll want to max your concentration skill (which takes clerics all natural points) and have decent... what check is what they used... spot/search.. whatever and still maybe a few points into the social bluff/intimidate stuff.

CON is obviously important, but.. kind of not essential to max.

Actually STR, DEX and CON are all kind of important, but you can get by with average scores, there's magic items for raising all of them, you can craft items for all of them. And you have spells to boost them once you start getting cleric levels.

And yeah, entry bandits, all early fights are seriously hard.
Until you level up a few times, everything seems impossible.
Helps a bit to spend whole party's cash for one decent beginning armor.
