hey guys I've just started and have a really noob question.. alot of the basic equipment you can buy like boots, gloves, helmets and stuff is all;

AC +0, Max Dex Bonus - or 0, Max Speed -, Armor check penalty 0, spell failure 0.

so yeah, does that mean all that stuff is pointless wearing and offers no proection? Leather gloves, chainmail gloves, whatever, all says that and wearing them doesn't change any of the stats on my guys so what is the point?

also is "scribe scroll" worth it if I don't have a wizard (only a sorcerer)? I have identify which seems really useful.

Yeah, the equipment is useless, only for the looks.
Except later on you can enchant them if you have "craft magic..." feat.

Scribe scroll.. not sure but I think you can use it with sorcerer as well.
It's for making your own scrolls (with XP and gold cost), learning spells from scrolls is.. spellcraft? (not sure about that).
Thanks and yeah I can use scribe scroll as a sorceror which I guess would be a useful feat. Still not entirely sure what the skill spellcraft does, something about learning spells as they are cast whatever that means..still it's a primary stat for a sorcerer so I guess it must be useful :)
ok I have another question... I got the identify spell to save money as I have a load of scrolls and potions that arent identified and it costs 100g a time to identify. Only I just found out using the identify spell also costs 100g!? what is the point of even having that?

Oh I didn't remember that.! Practicality I guess, not having to travel all the way back just to see if you can use the new sword or if it's cursed.

PS. You can also identify scrolls and potions with 0-level "read magic",
not sure how much that costs.

And if I'm correct "spellcraft" is mainly for adding scrolls to your spell book.
Maybe for counterspells, if ToEE has those, haven't tried.

There's a trick. You can scribe scrolls for half their value. According to the official rules, you should still pay full price for any material components needed (like the 100 GP for identify) but due to a bug you only pay half the material cost. So scribing Identify scrolls and using them to identify your items saves you a bit of cash for the price of 1 XP per scroll.

Scrolls and potions can be identified with Read Magic at no extra cost as Jarno mentioned

Spellcraft can be used to identify spells as they're being cast which can be useful if you want to use the counter spell action. It's also needed by wizards to learn more spells. (Sorcerers and Bards can only learn new spells when they gain new levels)
yeah luckily I have a cleric and the "read magic" spell doesn't cost any gold. kinda strange that the higher level 1 spell "identify" costs 100g but the level 0 spell is free. Though I guess read magic only works with scrolls and potions and not items.

ok I think I understand spellcraft now thanks. If I use the counter spell action will that allow my sorcerer to select that spell when I level up that I wouldn't normally be able to select then?

Sorcerers can know only a limited number of spells of each spell level. The number of Sorcerer levels determines how many spells of each level a sorcerer knows. This means that a sorcerer can cash more spells per day than a Wizard but the Wizard will have a wider selection of known spells. Spellcraft is useful for a Wizard who wants to learn more spells than the 2 free ones he gets on level up but has not effect on the number of spells a Sorcerer can know.

No. Counterspell is used to disrupt enemy spellcasters and cause their spells to fail. To use this you have to select the "Ready for counterspell" action with your spellcaster. If an enemy spellcaster then tries to cast a spell your character has to make a spellcraft check of DC 15+spell level (to identify what the spell is). If this check succeeds then you can counter the spell by using either 1) the same spell 2) an opposed spell (e.g. Haste to counter Slow) 3) Dispel Magic (may not succeed) 4) any spell of the same school of higher level (must have the Improved Counterspell feat to use this option). If both your spellcraft check succeeds and you have one of the above types of spells available to cast then the spell is used to cancel the enemy spellcaster's spell.
