I just installed the TOEE, no CO8 mod. I am running Windows 7, Avast virus protection. The game launches fine and gets to the game menu. However, after walking out of the room while the game was starting up, I came back to find that the game had crashed to desktop (the message was "TOEE.EXE stopped working"). I noticed that if I click nothing on the game menu (where you can choose to start a game, quit, use the tutorial, etc.) and the scrolling background/music finishes, the game crashes to desktop. I have tried running as administrator and disabled user controls. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks, Jarmo. If by the intro video, you mean the short movie prior to the game menu, no -- that plays fine. It's after the intro movie is finished and you get to the main game menu. If you click nothing on the game menu and let the scrolling temple graphic in the background finish, it will crash.

Oh, and I have the game installed on a different drive (not the OS drive).

I think that's the point where the game tries to run the intro video?
Anyway, the game's unstable if installed into the (default location) programs folder.
So make sure it's somewhere else.

I think you can disable videos (at least with Co8 installed) so that might help.
(or at least help identifying the problem).
I also just installed TOEE. I also have Windows 7 and Avast. I also had the exact same thing happen to me.
This is a full description of the (same/similar) problem I'm having (with or without the Co8 mod), doesn't matter.

The game opens up and the intro video plays perfectly. When I get to the main menu, some of the menu is broken up. The mouse sometimes shows itself a thousand times, unmoving, on the screen. The main menu can more or less be seen though. Though I can't see the mouse touch it, I can hear the sound it makes when it comes in contact with a menu item. On click, I get to a second menu, pretty much hidden underneath the first (often the first menu is the only visible menu). In short, the menu freezes. Within 5-10 seconds, it crashes.

Here are the things I've tried (mostly as a result of scouring the internet):
Multiple restarts.
Multiple reinstalls.
Co8 activation and frontend launcher. (when windowed option appears, the menu APPEARS fine but still freezes and then crashes.
Ran everything as administrator.
Checked various options in compatibility (under properties (right click exe).
Fooled around a ton with my video card settings (16 color instead of 32, 3d settings, etc).
Changed my resolution a ton.
Synced my resolution with both/either the Co8 resolution chosen in menu and/or toee config file.
Tweaked config file.
Cried.

Has anyone encountered this problem and gotten it to work properly on Windows 7? My despair is great.
I am experiencing Scounty's exact problem as well. I hope someone has an idea of what's going on.
Maybe try sending him a pm and ask if he resolved it, since it has been a while since he posted his comment.

I realize that if you guys are playing vanilla, this might not be the case, but check out the post section titled "THe phantom freeze problem" here. Also possibly could be the nVidia driver on your computer needs to be scaled back to an older version.

Also, maybe check out this and read the section "The Co8 Guide to Successful Gaming with ToEE". They suggest setting your video driver to "no scaling" and limiting the screen resolution to 1680 x 1050, as that has caused similar crashes to the problems you seem to be having.

Hope this helps. But if not, it really is worth trying to install C08 mod, since they got rid of a lot of other bugs you guys haven't encountered yet.

For me, my anti-virus software just won't let the Front End app run properly, so I have to deactivate it while I play the game.

Just reinstalled after a great while, and it works fine with win8 (+ amd 7770 GPU).

Anyway, thought to mention Co8 install instructions are to first install the game as is and launch it to see it runs (and maybe set some bits in right order).

Only then install Co8.
While it's a bug fix, it doesn't really make the game run if it doesn't run without it.
(unless except in some rare case where there's no working resolution without Co8).
Same thing happening with me anyone found a fix yet?
This would be my first stop:

http://www.gog.com/support/the_temple_of_elemental_evil/frequent_crashes_or_crash_at_startup

If that doesn't fix it, there may be a way to disable the videos, but I'm not sure.
I'm running the TFE-X.exe front end, and the "Circle of Eight Modpak 8.0.0 New Content," and under Win8.1x64 @ 1920x1200 without difficulty. Of course, the highest in-game menu selection for resolution I can select is 1280x1024 (which also works fine), but by editing the toee.cfg file it's child's play to change the game res to whatever you want--in my case to my native res of 1920x1200. Be advised that when you set the res that way, any res > 1280x1024 in the in-game *menu* will show up as something else--like 800x600 for instance--but that's just due to the older engine menu limits. It's very easy to see that the game itself is running @1920x1200--including the menus and the animations (the animations actually scale back to a lower res automatically, which is fine, though.)

I pretty much prefer the lower resolutions of 1280x1024 because everything is larger on screen than at 1920x1200 by a fair degree. 1920x1200 is definitely playable, though, at the moment.

hate to necro this thread, but i've got the same issue too, windows 7, laptop, the exact same problem, and i've tried all the same fixes too, with no clue as to what could be causing it, beyond that its a problem with video software

I had the problem of the game menu freezing at startup AFTER installing the Co8 mod, but I got this fixed by reinstalling the base game and setting the resolution up from 800x600 to 1024x768 before installing the Co8 mod again. No crash. Win 8 here, hope this helps someone.
