yeah, im attempting it.
I know this game is, for what its worth, a giant mess. Yet i like using my own portraits so im trying.

I got all the basic tools and i read the tutorials so far.
I even tried using the portrait wizard once but it appears that the wizard does not actually put the portraits into the proper (PC) section but just at the very end of the .mes which... seems wrong to me?

So anyway, does anyone here have expirience using custom portraits in ToEE?
Cause it sure isnt working very well for me, mostly i get the game to display funky colours as the portraits and then crash on me.

Any help would be apreciated!
There are portrait download packs at the Co8 website here, if you are using the Co8 mod, including instructions on how to do your own.

Grab Co8 like the man above said. And the game's nowhere near as big as a mess as folks say. There's a whole lot of fun in it.
Thanks i didnt know Co8 helps with importing portraits.
The thing is tho, when i try to install Co8 it gives me a weird error messege and i dont quite understand why.

might that have anything to do with me tinkering with the Portrait.mes?
Cause im pretty sure thats the only thing i did other than downloading it from GoG

EDIT: So i installed Co8 but it tells me there are no portrait packs available, i assume i gotta get these seperatley?

EDIT 2: Well i managed to get that one working, so i realize i need to make a ZIP file and turn it into a .tpp file.
tried to do that and it does not actually recognize it as a Portrait pack, what am i doing wrong?

The installation instructions for the portrait packs should be on that same page I linked to above.

Basically iirc you download the portrait pack (which is actually an install wizard), then run it and tell it to install to your ToEE game folder. The installer does the rest. The next time you run the TFE-X utility to start the game, you can now see the name of the portrait pack listed along with the Co8 mod 8.00. THere is a button on the bottom that allows you to activate modules. Do that, and activate the portrait pack. Now play the game as normal, and you will see the new portraits have been added.

I did that, thats not the problem.

I tried it on two different installs now, the result remains the same.

When i use the default portrait pack that is installed it doesnt crash.
However as soon as i change one of the portraits it does display the portrait in the game, but as soon as i open up any dialogue the game immediatly crashes.

my guess is that it may have something to do with the .tga file.
Gimp does not give you a 32 bit option, but .tga does not support 64 bit so i dont know if it could be this, any idea?

My guess is that you are saving the .tga in RLE compression. Don't. The file sizes must be:

_b_ (130x150) == 77kb
_s_ (53x47) == 10 kb
_m_ (42x37) == 7 kb

If your custom portraits have smaller sizes, then you are using RLE compression. Again, don't.

I'm too tired to really process all this now, but if you're still looking to insert your own custom portraits, I finally figured it out. I don't use portrait packs or anything. I just copy the .tgas to the portrait folder, and add new portrait.mes entries.
