I installed the latest Co8 patch but when I start the game it goes black nothing comes on the screen until I force close it...Any suggestions ? I tried changing the resolution in the ToEE Front-End X and that does nothing.

Might be off, but sounds like you're in the right track.
I'd guess the game's starting in some resolution/refresh rate your system doesn't support. There should be a way to use ATI/Nvidia control panel to force the refresh rate you want for a given resolution (the one you chose in the game).

Or it's something quite different...

I'm having a similar issue on my end. Everything works fine up to the opening cinematic. After that, though, the screen goes black except for a small square in the top left corner of the screen, and stays that way until either I force it down or it crashes. The weird thing is that the game worked fine for the first hour or two that I played it. I minimized out of full screen to take a Skype call and when I pulled it back up again, the screen was black, I had to shut it down, and it wouldn't work correctly when I booted it up again.

I've tried reinstalling the DirectX package in the troubleshooting guide, my drivers are up to date (or they should be, given the game worked fine before) and I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, with no success.

Have you tried using the Co8 front end to switch to some other resolution?
That might jolt it back to normal, to use a schientifix term.

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand too much of that. I've changed the resolution, which didn't help, and you completely lost me at "Co8 front end." Any chance at a more detailed explanation for the computer illiterate?

Have you installed Circle of Eight modpack, which fixes about all bugs still in the official version (which you get from gog or elsewher)?

But if you managed to change the resolution already, then that's not it.

To at least answer your question, no. I haven't done anything with Circle of Eight, just the vanilla game.

if I turn my screen off and on again it works lol stops being black and shows the main menu.

Hi,

I had the same issues. What seemed to help me is pulling up toee executeable properties and selecting windows xp (sp3) compatibility mode, and run in 640x480 screen resolution. This seemed to fix the problem. I also diabled the intro from Co8 launcher panel.

I have the exact same problem. When I make a fresh install with Co8, the game worked, I reached level 3 and the moathouse. Then a program running in the background forced ToEE to minimize, and now I only see the black screen with the little square on the top left.
It is very annoying, cause except for that I am enjoying the game.
