I just downloaded version 1.33 of ToME. How exactly do I install it without losing my progress and unlocks? I am playing on Windows and also have the expansion, Ashes of "Uknowtheword".
On linux, your profile information (including saves and unlocks) is stored in ~/.t-engine/. I don't know where it's stored on windows/mac, but I am reasonably sure it's outside of the primary game folder for this very reason.

It would make sense if it even saved this information in your user account so you can download it if you're on an unfamiliar machine, but I wouldn't want you to count on this just because I said it would make sense, as I haven't tested it.

For maximum safety, just install over your existing installation. Download the new files, choose the old install location as the new install location, it should overwrite files as necessary without doing much violence to your configuration & saves.
Thanks, that did it.

With Windows, I found the folder under "User/Name/T-Engine". (Who would have thought of "T-Engine"? The folder is usually named after the game or the developer. I wish developers would either settle on one commen place where to put these files, save them in the actual game folder (like it once was) or at least ask me where to put them.)

I simply installed the updated base game over the old install and then did the same with the DLC (although this hadn’t been updated). When I then started the game, all my unlocks were still there and I could also load my old characters. (I don’t have an online profile, by the way.)
