Does this game provide an ability to play in ASCII 'graphics' like classic rogue-likes?
Modern builds of ADOM still have similar functionality for example.

I believe there is an option in there somewhere, however it's still experimental.

Yes, it does.
From the Tales of Maj'Eyal main menu
Go to Game Options setting
On UI tab, select Graphics Mode setting
On the pop-up window "Select Style"
Switch from Modern to ASCII or ASCII with background

Would recommend using "ASCII with background" mode, just for asethic reasons.

Thanks.
I suspected that option to be available, since ToME initially is based on Angband's engine, but was not sure.
Glad I was able to help you out.
A small FYI to anyone using the ASCII option - not all details are displayed (e.g. tidal waves or ghoul retch) and this can make some quests very hard to complete.

That was fixed long time ago. In 1.7.4 ASCII with background display tidal waves, ghoul retch and entropy zone.
