some win9x compatibility fix, if memory serves.
anyway, to clear the EE vs SSP situation completely - EE is built upon mods and fixes (some already existing, and some completely new) that were made by members of the systemshock.org community. some of those were also used in SSP. the EE build is a new thing, not available in this form before the GOG release, and it supersedes everything that's been available up to this point. currently, it's the best way of playing SS1 on a modern computer.

Cool. What was incompatible?
(Back when I first tried the Mouselook patch, I had played the majority of the game on a P3 600 running Win98 hooked up to my living room TV. I don't recall any issues with compatibility other than a conventional memory issue if I attempted to run it on command line ("Salt the Fries"). I fixed that by altering the properties for the .exe and cranking the base available memory, and then just running it out of Win Explorer, which worked fine. This was with the base game from my CD plus the Mouselook over it, no other patches involved.)

HiPhish: Since this was not properly answered: You get the enhance edition and the classic edition. Classic is the original DOS release, it has none of the improvements, but you could try to get the mods that were used for SSP to work with it. Or wait for SSP to be made into a standalone patch.
The enhanced edition is the DOS version in a compatibility wrapper for Windows, plus enhancements. This means it's not running through DOSBox, but natively on Windows and Windows only. You could try to get it to work through Winde, it's supposed to work according to people who tried it, but don't take my word for it.
Thanks for answering...I have the Enhanced CD DOS version of the game with a couple of mods that add mouselook, bindable keys, etc.--and it runs like a champ under Win10x64 @ 1024x768...I'm running it under 64-bit dosbox SVN-daum with shader support--and it runs splendidly under Win10x64 @ 1024x768. Dos the GOG version run @ higher resolutions? If not, I don't much see the sense of the "wrapper" business as that's just another mod in itself...;) The DOSbox version runs great...

korell: It is an enhancement of the SSP, and it has higher system requirements. So it isn't quite the same as SSP.
voodoo47: no, EE is using a reworked version of Malba Tahan's SHLINK, which was never part of SSP. under normal circumstances, it should have better stability and be faster than dgvesa and dosbox in SSP. EE runs nice on my very old XP machine, doing about 30 FPS where dgvesa was doing about 15 and dosbox about 0.5 (yeah, that's half a frame). Korell

I've just been playing for an hour and even on my old machine it works "out of the box" just fine. Played more of SS1 now than I ever have before (I always gave up due to the control system and I never gave SSP a good try).

I'm with you on that feeling. The only upside I can see is AFAIK, presumably Malba is being contracted (read as paid) for the Shlink upgrades in the EE.

no idea why - EE is just the CD version bundled with a new version of SHLINK. and SHLINK is a mod/loader that allows the game to run natively under windows, adds higher resolutions, mouselook, and allows rebinding of keys.
SSP has been using mouselook/key mapping/high resolution mod, basically the predecessor of SHLINK - adding the extra features but without running under windows natively. so to be able to run the game on modern systems, a combination of dosbox and dgvesa emulation software has been used. SHLINK would have been used eventually (as soon as it would play music), but then the GOG release happened.

Note that you can remove the letterboxing for non-16:9 resolutions by editing sshock.ini (e.g. for 16:10 try CustomWidth=768). Resolutions closer to native have a big performance hit. Wider aspect ratios are closer due to the locked FOV whereas 16:10 will actually gain vertically when compared to 16:9.
