So Steam has this for $6.99 today which is the first sale I've seen for this game that has positive reviews all over the place. GOG hasn't been below $9.99 upto now. Anyways, if and when GOG puts it on sale, I don't think it'd go much lower than this price since its still quite popular.

Anyhow, my question...does anyone have knowledge of what the differences may be between the Steam and GOG versions, if any? Can help me decide to get it now or wait for a GOG sale. I tried looking but nothing jumped out at me so thinking they're exactly the same.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Sorry cant help you, I believe they are the same.
I do want to point that imo its ass of steam of venture in gog territory, they have done so with other titles previously as well.
Steam has new games, games from when steam started and onwards and a ton of indie titles.
Cant they leave the old old games just for gog?

Sorry, but that really is an ignorant thing to say. You say that as if GoG has exclusive rights to old titles, let's not forget they have recent titles on here too. Steam has a variety of dated titles and modern ones. Many. Why should Steam opt out of adding this game from their system just out of kindness towards their competitors? Do you even know how running a business works?

This isn't an "ass" of Steam at all. It's just common sense.

Actually when Gog announced its release of SS2, they discussed that company that helped make it happen would also be releasing it on Steam a little later.

Steam has nothing to do with the distribution directly, in most cases. Companies who hold the game rights may decide to distribute with them.

The same goes with GOG.

Oh god the fanboys are out.
the recommendation for the steam version of SS2 is the same as for the steam version of Thief - manually move/copy the files out of steam's reach, patch up and play.
Wasn't expecting a fight to break out and I certainly didn't mean for that to happen with my question but I see in hindsight my choice of the subject title was a poor one. Sorry.

Anyhow, thanks voodoo47 for giving an answer to the original question.
I'm glad to see the game available on Steam - competition, wider availability of a classic game, yadda yadda, but GOG comes with all those delicious extras, a flat international price plan and the nice helpful community to assist with mods in getting the game running juicily. That's what would likely swing my decision if I hadn't already bought here and were trying to decide.

My throbbing GOG love grows stronger most weekends.. <3
So. Does anyone know if there is any issues with the Steam version compared to this one? I'm considering purchasing it.

The Steam version by default has multiplayer disabled. There's a work around, but it's a bit annoying. Also, the GOG version and the Steam version are different in patch numbers, so co-op won't work out of the box.

I would like to have this confirmed - please open the steam shock2.exe properties and check the product version.

Perfect answer Teoes...you sold me on the GOG version. Just gotta get GOG to put it on sale now someday soon.
ok, so the steam version is pre-patched with ss2tool 5.1 - this means it uses NewDark 2.42, which is good, but also that somebody has used ss2tool on a commercial release without the author's permission. again.
Now let' see if Steam takes the high road, like GOG, and comes clean.......

I doubt it.

yeah. I've made an 2.42 update for GOG (ss2tool independent, as they don't want to use the tool anymore), and sent it to their support, lets hope they will update the GOG build soon - I don't want to see the steam version being better than the GOG version. in ANY aspect.
