Listen bud, I played the game originally back around 1996 and even then I knew it to be the case, the music is straight up too funky, the monster design is too goofy. I loved the dang game a hecka lot but you guys are trying to pull some weird retroactive polishing on this game's legacy that just isn't the case.

Actually, that generally seems to be the case on GOG, near universally reviled on release games like Vampire: Redemption or Omikron have like ridiculously good scores yet they're just awful beyond belief. What's the deal? Are you guys starting to even idolize the most mediocre crap that came out back in the day? Not to say that's the case with SS, everyone loved SS, but still needing to memorize 50 hotkeys to play a game and then releasing it as an "Enhanced Edition" is a joke.
On that note, the easiest way to tell if a game is absolutely awful on GOG is if the star rating is below 4.5, I'm not even kidding, that's the metric that runs on this site.

Anyway, you're all goofballs, your reviews are goofball, and your weird salivating and denial of how stupid some stuff was in games back then is ridiculous.

So, the day EyeNixon got hired as the PR manager and to write up releases:

Thene Park
Surpassed by Rollercoaster Tycoon games. Therefore it's shit. Do not buy.

Ultima
It's a crap RPG. Do not buy.

Outlaws
Outdated shooter. Terrible controls. Do not buy.

EyeNixon never managed to write more release announcements after being fired from his position.

The game can actually be fully finished with mouse only. If you wish to use mouselook, you need to memorize the key 'e'. If you wish to move around using keyboard as well, you need to memorize 'wsad'. ... Yeah. Oh right, then you need to memorize left and right mouse button.

Actually, let's see, keys I am currently realistically using for playing the game:
Left and right mouse buttons
'E' for mouselook/inventory toggle
'WSAD' for movement
'Shift' for sprint
'Spacebar' for jump
'Esc' for menu
...
Oh, right, 'z' and 'c' for leaning.

The game is definitely taxing my memory.

What exactly was the point of this OP? Are you trying to shade a 21 year old game? Go eat a big donut, man.
I know right, these people and their goofball ways. They are so WACKY!

Seriously though, OP does have some good points, if a bit poorly worded. But I don't think System Shock was ever considered mediocre. (Or am I just reading that wrong?)

You are, he actually said that System Shock is good. Well, he said that System Shock was popular and well-liked at its release at any rate.

Anyway, OP does have a point in saying that GOG releases games which are fairly mediocre and market them as being blast from the past and that the GOG review scores are completely useless. The former is to be expected - it's not like GOG's going to release a game and say "We guess it's okay. Like... We've seen worse games you know. So buy it. Or not. Whatever." The latter is to be expected as GOG is a site built entirely around nostalgia and allows people who did not buy a game to review it - generally, when somebody remembers a game which came out 20 years ago, said someone either liked it or really, really hated it. Nobody's going to give a mediocre review to a mediocre game as people just don't remember those games anymore.

It's not really an issue tho. It's not like you should trust a retailer about what he says when it comes to quality of sold product, especially when it can only be rated subjectively - and more objective user reviews/critic reviews are quite easy to find on aggregate review sites like Metacritic.

Its got good atmosphere. Love the funky music with the darkness.
I like how the games referenced by the OP are, at the least, considered cult classics and enjoyed enough to still get high scores on a site that caters to easily making available everyone's favorite classics.

Everyone has different tastes, and many people enjoy the good old games they may have played at one point. Even people who never played any of these before can come here and grab games they've only heard of and see what they've missed, whether they end up liking them or not. Even Daikatana has fans, beyond those who merely want to find out what that was all about.

So while I can agree that System Shock 1's UI is far from streamlined and takes some time to work out, there's still a really unique and interesting game here. I've never even played System Shock 1 until now, but my being new to this oldie doesn't diminish what the game does for me. If it's the graphics or sound quality that bother you, then perhaps you're judging the book by its cover here.

Frankly, there are plenty of modern Triple-A games that really are just watered down, super expensive time-wasters you can get through in a short evening and come out of the experience with nothing but disappointment. I'm not feeling that here in this case. Sure, they'll be super streamlined by comparison, with a simple UI and key layout that even a chimpanzee could figure out, but that sure seems like a poor trade for the amount of money being spent when considering games.

Unless you require state-of-the-(current)-art graphics and high definition audio, and can't accept that those things aren't possible in a game developed in the early 90s, you really can't go wrong with at least half the games on GOG. This is also likely due to the fact that most of these were asked for by us users in the first place, so it's unlikely you'll find a large enough group of people specifically begging for the most forgettable and worst of the worst of the oldies that do deserve even lower ratings.

And usually the worst only come through because they're part of a franchise or series that include much better games. Like Master of Orion 3. Yet even that has some fans with their own valid reasons for enjoying it.

So while I don't believe the OP is serious, the OP is entitled to their own strange tastes.
