Hi there.

I'am looking for the complete System Shock 1 Soundtrack - BUT - it would be nice if it is an unaltered record of the OST in Adlib / OPL / Soundblaster 16 mode.

It seems i can only find enhanced versions of the soundtrack which are either played back using General Midi / AWE32 / Soundfonts or are plain remixes. These are fine and some are unbelievable great, but it is not like the original when played back using a Soundblaster 16 / pro.

I could start Dosbox and record the OST while playing the game, but is there another way to fasten up this process?

Just to give you an example - it should sound like this:

Not like this:

I would also like to know if it's possible to improve the MIDI playback in general for this game! I still got a working Soundblaster Xi-FI card but I have no clue on how can I improve sound processing as OP said I'm sure my game is still using the crappy Windows soundfonts :(
You don't need an X-Fi Card - a normal onboard soundchip will do.
Read this thread and have fun:

You can tell Windows to use one of the X-Fi MIDI synths as the default, instead of the crappy Microsoft software synth:
http://pcaudiohelp.com/how-to-change-the-default-midi-device-in-vista-and-window-7/

On Windows 8/10, you may need to use a different approach (might also work on Windows 7 if you do not want to muck around in the registry).

If you want to get even fancier, use the Soundfont Bank Manager software (comes with the soundcard, and can also be downloaded from Creative's support site) to load a better MIDI soundfont. Check this topic for suggestions.

You should not need Virtual MIDI synth or anything like that; the X-Fi hardware synths will almost certainly work better anyway.

Note that for DOSBox games you may need to [url=http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Configuration:MIDI]configure DOSBox[/url] to use the right MIDI synth.

Okay.... The original poster asks very specifically about FM music, not midi music. Then the second post asks about how to improve midi music!?

These are two different technologies:

FM: is Adlib, is Sound Blaster (1.0/1.5/2.0/Pro/16), any old ISA sound card with a Yamaha OPL2 or OPL3 chip or clone thereof.
You can recognize such FM music by its poor drum sounds, FM can't really produce proper drum sounds.

General midi: Sound Canvas, Wavetable, Midi Synths. These are referencing Banks with pre-recorded waveforms.

General midi can emulate FM only if one uses pre recorded waveforms as taken from an FM chip. But there is not a single way of doing this. Because there is are so many ways to program an FM chip to make certain sounds.

Here are some system shock recordings of both:
http://www.wavetable.nl/?cat=4&paged=2
Files with suffix [Creative SB 2.0].mp3 = FM OPL2 = Mono sound
Files with suffix [Creative SB Pro2].mp3 = FM OPL3 = Stereo Sound (but no fluent panning, hard left right only)
All the others there are General Midi synths of some sort.

I also have 6 tracks of .dro FM Adlib recordings of system shock here. One can play these with Adplug software. I will upload them if desired.

Well, if you insist on being all "on topic" and such...

You can find the game's music files in the following location:
Enhanced edition: [game folder]\res\sound\genmidi
Classic edition: [game folder]\SSHOCK\SOUND\GENMIDI

They are in XMI format, which some MIDI players can open. Personally I use with the [url=http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_midi]MIDI decoder extension. It supports custom soundfonts, so you can make it sound old and shitty with this OPL-3 FM soundfont.
The MIDI decoder also has "Adlib", "FM", and "OPL" modes you could try.

well, no. let's talk about MP3 compression or something ;)

They can open XMI, but I won't expect them to play the different 'subsongs' used for the dynamic arrangement. These players only play the first subsong in the XMI file.

Foobar2000 with the MIDI decoder does play the subsongs. Obviously you do not get the dynamic arrangement, but you can at least hear all of it.

Okay, that is cool.
Guys? Thank you so much :)
I didn't know that foobar would also playback midi files.
I hope the end result will be as "perfect" as the original DOS-Version sounded when using adlib/sb16/pro as music device.

Thanks dudes :)
