Was going to post a big post about this, but meh, deleted it.
The file was downloaded quite enough times for redistribution links to show up. I simply don't care anymore. Oh, and 1 second on Bing and immediately a working link shows up.

Since Elenarie is his/her infinite wisdom removed the link, I had to take a good while finding the new installer. Here is a link for OpenAL 2.1.0.0: http://support.focus-home.fr/oalinst.exe
It was provided by someone in tech support at the runaway support forums here: http://forum.runaway-thegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=11075&start=15

If anyone has been unable to get 3D positional audio in System Shock 2 to work, you may be interested in a project I have been working on:
www.indirectsound.com
It works similarly to Creative's ALchemy, but emulates audio hardware acceleration in software so that any audio device can use it. If you already have a Creative sound card you don't need this, but if you have more than 2 speakers and haven't been able to get SS2 to use them you may want to try it out. (If you do try it feel free to let me know if you encounter any problems, and I'll see if I can fix them.)

Thanks a million for this! I have 7.1 through integrated Realtek, and can never get EAX or other surround from old games to work because supposedly my hardware doesn't support it. This should do the trick. I'll let you know if I have any issues, so that you can make your product better.www.indirectsound.com

I've already had OpenAL installed somehow & the sound quality/3D effect comparison to normal is huge, but am unable to check its version (neither regedit or add/remove in control panel do not show the version number).

For some reason, System Shock 2 is still not working as surround. My Windows is configured properly for it, and surround works for newer games. OpenAL is the only way I can get Stereo through the game, however EAX makes a very echo-y muddled stereo, but still nothing from my center or rears. Anyone else have this problem?

jonpol: I'm glad to be of help! In retrospect I should have started a new topic rather than hijacking this one; I don't anticipate you'll have any problems, but if you do feel free to start a new thread. In the meantime, enjoy your 7.1 :-)
Okay, so if anybody else is having trouble with getting 3d audio (quad, 4.1, 5.1, 7.1 etc) working in SS2, I can happily report that IndirectSound does fix it! It works flawlessly for me, all my channels are working like they should. Just make sure you don't have your audio channels set too high, that's why mine wasn't working right away. They were set at 48 by default. I changed that to 8 after JonPol messaged me to give me personalized support! How cool is that!? +1 JonPol! IndirectSound is awesome!

I advise everyone to use OpenAL Soft instead of that OpenAL driver. OpenAL Soft offers HRTF which creates a great sense of positioning with headphones by filtering the sounds the same way our brain does (it's much better than Dolby Headphone etc., check it on YouTube).
As I'm not allowed to post links, google "openal soft reddit" and check the first entry on how to get it and enable HRTF.
