I have this game on cd, can I update this to what the digital version are offering in terms of compatibility?
(Going to be using it in wine on linux.)

Yes, ss2tool (5.1 or newer). Follow the CD install instructions. You should also look at the first 5 mods at least.

FYI, I've never tried running it in wine.

you might need to prepare the install on a windows machine, but once it's fully patched you should be able to just copy it to your linux box and run it without much trouble - but do make sure to run the game in the very same resolution as your desktop.
