Hello, i just bought SS2, installed the SS2Tool (but i haven't installed any graphics mods...) and when i started the game i experienced frame dropping... I think that it's wierd, since it's an old game.

My specs are:

CPU: AMD Athlon 2600+
RAM: 512 MB DDR1
GPU: RADEON 9600 SE 128MB
OS: WIN XP SP3

that's why. the gpu was slow when it was new, TEN years ago. anyway, as long as you keep the resolution down, and make sure multisampling is disabled, the framerates should be acceptable. re-run the tool, and uncheck it under game features.

Actually, i re-installed SS2 without the SS2Tool and everything's OK now, vanilla experience. But you're saying that multisampling was causing this? And how can i disable it? I'll try running the game with the tool again.

(and trust me, i've been through a LOT with this forsaken GPU...)
As a former user of a laptop with the R300 chipset, I can only agree with voodoo47 that the GPU is the bottle neck. It was ridiculously underperforming in anything more straining than video playback, I think it would struggle with SS2 even under the original Dark engine, and I'm not surprised to hear that you're having issues with the NewDark engine. By the way, that fact makes it less of an old game: Don't let old looking art assets deceive you, the NewDark engine is up to specs for Windows Vista and beyond. The game you are playing now is not the same you would have found of an original print disc.

I know, but without the SS2Tool, it's the old game without the NewDark engine and it runs fine on my system (60 FPS).

I also tried the tool without multisampling a couple of minutes ago, but nothing happened in terms of improved perfomance.

I'll go vanilla for the time being and i'll use the tool and mods whenever i'll get my new PC.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the help.
almost forgot, ss2tool also enables some bloom effects by default, that's what is killing your performance. if you use the tool, and disable multisampling and bloom, the performance will be the same as with the default GOG build.

also, changing your graphics card for something like radeon9700/9800 would improve the performance significantly, if you have a store with used hardware nearby, you can try searching the 1$ junk bin.

Unless you bought an old CD copy that is incorrect- new dark is pre applied/ integrated into to all download versions and is completely independent of SS2Tool. Even if you weren't to use SS2Tool you'd still be using new dark.

SS2Tool will only install new dark if you have an old CD copy installed, otherwise it just conveniently configures what is already there.
OK guys, i got it: Installed the SS2Tool with the New Dark, but i have disabled MSAA and post-prosessing and it rocks now. Also installed SHTUP, Rebirth, ADaoB and Tacticool; all of this without frame dropping:)

This game rocks, BTW:)
