I tried everything. Is this solvable?

s1drano: Without knowing what the puzzle is or seeing a screenshot of it? Not solvable, I'm afraid.
That's not strictly accurate, since it would be possible to iterate through every puzzle in the game to create a compendium. (Or one could read a walkthrough guide.)

s1drano: I mean, if we want to be "strictly accurate", we'd have to agree that the puzzle is unsolvable since OP claimed they "tried everything". If it is solvable and you haven't solved it, then you haven't "tried everything" yet.
That was my point, Yes. =]

s1drano: Or are you suggesting you're going to play through the game 3 times in order to collect video materials of yourself solving all puzzles at all 3 difficulty levels and whatnot?

Be my guest. I'll be waiting until OP actually gives us something to go on.
The art of leadership implements delegation* … :-"

(Yes, I am being very facetious.)

________
* If anyone who likes this game is bored —— or otherwise motivated, perhaps they adore the game such that no amount of exposure, even for a tedious task such as iterating every puzzle, would be felt to be a waste of time —— then I invite them to attempt this (it would not be much different to the research required to compile a walkthru**) but, as you say, without some buy-in from the OP there is little to be gained.
** Oh, look. Someone already did it.

s1drano: That's for the original System Shock, but we don't even know which System Shock OP is talking about. Could be 2 (never played that one), or it could be the remake.

And apparently, the remake has randomized puzzle.: https://www.ign.com/wikis/system-shock-2023/Junction_Box_Puzzle_Guide_-_How_to_Solve_Every_Junction_Box_Puzzle

It's worth pointing out from the offset: all Junction Box Puzzles are randomized. You'll not get the same puzzles in your run as other players.

s1drano: So it appears my initial claim was strictly accurate after all: without knowing what the puzzle is or seeing a screenshot of it, it is unsolvable.
Even a randomized puzzle must have some algorithmic solution, though I see you are committed to being correct at the expense of being useful. (;-P) That being said, it is possible to (unintentionally) prevent oneself from advancing through the game, e.g.,

If a door is "broken beyond repair", you cannot ever get through.
But it is also true that they might have given up because the elevator didn't work and that can be a trivial problem to fix.

You never played the sequel? I couldn't play the first one because it was a hot mess, graphically, and was keyboard driven (a personal constraint) but I really liked the sequel. (Cybernetic chimpanzees!) I will probably pick up the remake to play it soon.

You are correct that the OP does not deserve an answer, since they were so vague, but what fun is that to discuss? (And the question was originally asked more than a dozen years ago, so they could be anywhere doing anything by now. I had to step over a couple of pages of links to find this old document.)

From the link I posted (from 1995):

FAQ's: (designed not to give away too much)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Always destroy all Cameras and Computer Nodes that you find. This will lower level security. Doors/switches etc. that say "blocked by level security" will all work when level security = 0% (and some will open when security drops to around 10%).
* On each level is a Cyborg Conversion chamber. A switch nearby will reconfigure it to heal you when you are killed, instead of turning you into a Cyborg.
* Some lit panels flat on the floor are elevators. Step on it to activate.
* Each Cyberspace Terminal leads to a different enclosed area. You will have to complete the area for each different Cyberspace Terminal that you find.
* If a door is "broken beyond repair", you cannot ever get through.
* Some elevators will not operate ("power diverted to …") until certain tasks are complete. If you are stuck, it is because you have failed to:
A) Explore all accessible areas of all levels that you can get to.
B) Read all of your E-mail and Logs for clues. The other folks on the station had several plans that they were trying to accomplish to defeat Shodan, maybe you could complete some of their missions for them.
C) Conquer all accessible areas of Cyberspace for codes and computer-locked door switches.
* Many levels cannot be completed on your first pass. You will have to continue up to other levels and come back later.
* No level is ever completely "clear" of enemies. They continue to reappear. Always be on your guard. […]

So being the first and only person to explain how to write a better question that might have a chance at being answered is not useful, but nitpicking about trivial matters that are completely irrelevant to the question at hand somehow is?

Ok, I'm out. Have fun trolling.

The question was "Posted May 05, 2024", that's 2 weeks ago.

Nice trolling, though.

But … I was sure that post was from 2012 when I wrote that! (That is why I linked the old walkthrough from 1995.) It wasn't my fault!!! Gremlins in the system!!?!1! [/mock indignation] Oh well, I guess I'm a guilty of misinterpreting the date. I unreservedly apologize. How can I ever make it up to you?

Perhaps you don't understand the use of emoticons? (I thought explicitly mentioning persiflage might give it away but obviously not. :|) Nitpicking? I'll warrant it wasn't my best attempt to start a conversation but there was no animus involved. My contribution to the discussion was the walkthrough link, which you then denigrated.

To wit: I was chatting but you were taking offence. (Seriously, if I was attacking you there would not be any doubt.) You need more sleep, or less caffeine, or both.

Oh, and I do still recommend the sequel. Peace.
